Not finishing games

This year has been my worst i think.

Max Payne 3
Mass Effect 3
Guild Wars 2
Diablo 3
Insomnia
Walking Dead
Skyrim
Crysis 2
Battlefield 3
Batman Arkham City
Fallout New Vegas

To name but a few.

Funnily enough, I'm trying to sort this very problem out at the moment. Going back through some of the games I've bought but either not played or never finished.

My plan will hit a bit of an issue once Borderlands 2 releases in a week haha :)

I actually feel terribly guilty for buying a game if I don't finish it. I bought the Batman games when they were on special from Steam and played a few hours of Asylum and I don't like it. AvP I couldn't or wouldn't play for more than an hour or so then I'd just get bored and stop.

I only have a few hours a week to play a game so I'm usually quite choosy what I buy. I tend to try and finish one before buying another.

I buy games and either never start them or start them and never finish.

It's rare I ever complete a game... might be an age thing?

I think we all just have very short attention spans.

I can be so into a game, literally like its the best thing in the world, give it a few days/weeks and I just can't be bothered with it any more.

Im actually tempted to go back to Diablo 3 tonight. Probably played around 3 hours. Loved it at the time.

Loads, for me it's a combination of :

Tiredness
Lack of spare time
Reformatting my pc and forgetting to keep saves

I have actually been making an effort to get some of my Steam games completed recently, need to get a lot of them out of the way before the Christmas deals come along.

This pattern doesn't really fit with me; generally speaking if I "play it to death for a week or two" then I will see a game through to completion (unless I get stuck). I'd estimate that I only give up on maybe 25% max of games that I've invested more than 5hrs in. Note by "completion" I mean beating the main campaign/story and interesting sidemissions, not 100% completion.

Looking back over games I've played this year the only thing I can think of is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed where I clocked about 4hrs.

There are some games that I play for less than 2hrs and then stop (usually 1-2 sittings), recently this includes Just Cause 2 and Space Marine.

Plus like many others I have a big stockpile of over 100 games that I haven't even played once (plus another 20? or so on console). Including some AAA games e.g. Zelda on the Wii, I bought that about 5 years ago and it is still in cellophane!

Worth noting that I horde savegames for older games that I haven't completed, I've got plenty dating back more than 5 years. I still harbour ambitions to come back to most games that I've invested some time in, I just never get round to it.

I usually complete the games I play, I like the satisfaction it gives me to see it the whole way through. However, due to the sales, there is a greater likelihood of me picking up something that I normally wouldn't pay decent money for, so in this respect, inevitably there are a few that get left unfinished. I tend to reason that if I don't complete a title, then it's not really for me anyway.

I think this is just a general habit of getting older. Personally I just try to stop buying things I know I probably won't bother to play much at all. I resisted well during the Steam sales and there are only 2-3 games I haven't played yet. :p

I'm in the "play it till you finish it" camp too.

The only time I won't complete a game is if it doesn't live up to my expectations. Otherwise, I'll keep at it until the end credits roll.

The exception is MMOs. Like Most people I tend to get bored of them before seeing "end game" content.

I done this with Max Payne 3

i think i only have 2 Chapters left i just don't feel like finishing it... No idea why i loved it the first week i blasted it!

I find if I am gripped by a brilliant story or atmosphere (or hopefully both) I will be hooked and play it through to the end, (recently finally got round to stalker and was blown away!) I am playing through Alan wake at the moment and really enjoying it so will definatly finish that! But if a game is a by the numbers type of game I will usually give up after a few hours worth, most recently crysis 2 was the culprit I just found it so boring and not a patch on the first two games.

At the end of the day the new shinier toy will always win out.

I was playing Skyrim tons a few months back, then I started a MTW 2 Stainless Steel mod campaign and haven't touched it since.

I know this sounds a bit crazy, but when the nights really draw in and it's cold and wet and windy outside I will feel like SKYRIM again, it's just not a 'summer' game to me. I'll kick EVE back up again also. Same thing, sunny outside? I'm not into EVE.

This year (with the Steam sales) has been my worst. I've started so many games and played them thoroughly then got completely and utterly bored, and then I get so disinterested, I have no intention of going back, which results in trying another game and repeating the same ordeal again.

Since 2011-2012 the games I've not completed are:

Crysis 1 and 2 (I had Crysis 1 for years but only started playing it properly in 2011. With both games they started off great and then veered off in silly directions which lost my interest.)

Far Cry2 (Got fed up of re-spawning bad guys and generally was not as fun as Far Cry1)

Fallout 3 (This game was actually quite good, but the sheer vastness of the open world and missions was overwhelming - it became a real chore to get things done!)

Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Actually pretty darn good, and seeing the movie when it was re-released at the cinema got my interest pumping, but it didn't last for very long.)

Mafia 2 (OK... but I am not keen on gang orientated themes from 40s and 50s
which similarly is why I can't get into the Godfather films)

Metro 2033 (Started to play it but just didn't continue playing it)

STALKER (Got interested, then like Fallout 3 got overwhelmed with the sheer vastness of the world and ended up feeling like a chore getting from a to b)

Mass Effect 1 (Really, really promising game, except once it reached the point where you've just become a Spectre and go to other worlds to investigate things it just felt too linear and dull - despite all the different paths)

Skyrim (Completed around 15% of the game, had some important things happen in my life that took over my time, went back to the game this time with a new AMD 7950, game became buggy and haven't bothered since)

Does anyone have a recommendation of which game should be my priority to finally complete? I feel compelled to try and complete at least one of the games I've started.

^^ Maybe Metro. It's linear, and you won't feel overwhelmed by the size of the game world. Also, it's one of the finest looking games (mods aside). I would suggest Stalker, but if non-linear shooter / rpg's aren't your thing, then no matter how good the mod is, there's little point you playing them.

How's the 7950's btw? :)

New Vegas. Put god knows how many hours into it, but never managed to finish the main story. Fantastic game though.

LA Noire. Lost interest in the game. Loved the setting

Alan Wake. Got about halfway but the repetitive combat just annoyed me

RPG's are games I usually see through to the end. Anything repetative like shooters I usually struggle to finish

I don't mind linear, but it shouldn't be too mind numbingly linear. RAGE felt like that. From what I know, Metro has a more interesting story compared to RAGE, and doesn't end hopefully in an abrupt WTF kind of way. But yeah, I will give Metro another look.

The 7950's are fine but crossfire and AMD drivers in general are buggy. They are better than they were in the beginning, if that's any consolation.:o:p
