I

If you feel like you really must do something I'd focus on your friends lack of awareness of the road worthiness of her vehicle instead of trying to get the garage in trouble.

These were my immediate thoughts too. Don't start trying to put blame elsewhere - it is your friend who has responsibility for her car and to ensure she isn't driving around with tyres that are on the verge of blowing out.

I'd say rather than moaning about MOT station do:

Explain to your friend how MOT's work and what failing/dangerous means
Teach her basic car checks - oil, tyres(pressure/thread), lights, screenwash etc

will take you 10 minutes and will avoid this in the future.

end of day she is an adult and should be able to understand the basics like that, a dangerous fault and mot failure means = do not drive the car.

Shocking how people do not understand that it isn't other peoples jobs to parent adults.

I find a lot of garages don't volunteer information that they really should be providing to the customer though - for instance I had a metal plate hanging off the bottom of my truck secured by only 1 of the 3 screws that should have been there - and 3 garages that did work on the truck must have seen it yet did nothing let alone tell me - was only when I had it jacked up to check something else I found it (I have reason to believe it was like that for some time).

In this case though there isn't much excuse for not reading the MOT details and acting on them even if the garage by the sounds of it should have exercised some advisory capacity.

You need to take your car to better garages in future.

I could show you 1000 garages like that around here but I have only found 1 that I trust to do things right first time and not try and pull wool over my eyes.

Again this is down to you. You need to do your research online on forums for specialist indy reviews.

Since this is still going on, I'll update the story a little since I passed on all your comments :p

It seems I got the wrong end of the stick when I said about the bald tyre. The tyre was only a few weeks old and so had full tread across the whole width, what the MOT station spotted was a bulge in the side wall on the inner side that had come up and exposed some cords, which the garage said to her was probably just a manufacturing defect that had manifested itself.

This doesn't change the driving off after it failed bit, but she assured me she is aware of basic maintenance, fluids and tyres etc, but unless you get on your hands and knees to check the inside of your tyres every time before you drive off, this wasn't an obvious thing to spot.

Wait, you don't?

You would e surprised how many can't be bothered to do simple checks and think the MOT is there to do it. These are the ones that also don't realise it is 3points for every illegal tyre. There were carers that came to a neighbour last year and most of them had tyres with zero tread on the front, most were also young girls. My friend owns a large garage and he charges £10 to replace a bulb if it fails on an MOT as that is something you check regularly. Also, these people are driving on the road every day with us.

My car was MOT’d less than a month ago without a single tyre related advisory. I check my tyres every couple of months but that’s all. No one checks them before every journey. Or if they do they need psychiatric help for OCD.
