NOTEBOOK: Antivirus.. would you install

Microsoft Security Essentials is OK for very light use, but if it's your main PC I'd look elsewhere, mainly at paid for AV solutions. I'm running Kaspersky and it's pretty hot on everything really, NOD32 also rates quite highly. There is a big antivirus thread to look at anyway.

I use the MS AV on my netbook, but I wouldn't use it on a more capable notebook that could have something a little better. Security Essentials hasn't been that reliable for me, needed reinstalling a few times and it's never found anything infected, and usually there's at least something after a year of use. I'd have to see some decent numerical comparisons they do with AV reviews to comment further.

I personally use Kaspersky Internet Security on my desktop and netbook (and gave the third license to my gf :p), and I much prefer it to the others. It's pretty light on resources and I've never really had an issue with it. I might try NOD32 when my license runs out though..

Opinion based on experience and numerous tests, if things have changed in it's favour recently then great but it wasn't doing at all well previously.

I have used AVG free for a few years now, and its always done very well in test. On detection, resources and false alarms.
I can't think of a period of time that it has dropped the ball, or at leats had serious issues that would cause it not be used.
If you are not sure yourself, TBH you maybe should not discount something so flippantly.
Not saying it is the best out there, but its definitely one of the better AV products, and probably the best FREE one, from numerous tests I have read.
From your comments, it would appear to be very poor, to the point of been dangerous to use.

Your own link says otherwise.

I can, google it yourself.

I am very sure it's not the best, and far from it so I'm not discounting it flippantly at all.

The link that you posted says you are wrong and that is not one of the better freebies at all, and yes it is dangerous to use in my experience.

As the title says, i'm going to put AVG on a note book. Will it slow it down or is there another AV i can use?

No it should be fine, my Mum has a low spec Dell desktop that runs it fine as can be. PC Pro did a big round up in the labs a while ago, the individual reviews can be found here http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/internet-security and AVG got 5/6 finding 93% of malware in the tests. Avira got slightly better results but nags you daily to upgrade, AVG also has the link scanner included but remember, no firewall.

I used to hate the bloated Norton stuff but these days has a much smaller footprint and runs surprisingly well, is easy to use and has excellent detection rates but you have to pay, can be had for less than £25 which isn't much when you think how we rely on it, we all probably caned more than that in the last Steam sale :)

I had been using Kaspersky for some years (get it free as a Barclays customer) but I've switched to Norton as Kaspersky is a system hog in my experience and the reviews were generally positive but I found configuring it to be a b1tch as there are just too many options and it was slow to auto-update and would normally need me to manually run it on booting.
