Noticable decrease in performance

Hello,

My specs are as follows;

4870 1gb
Q6600 @3ghz
DDR2 Dominator 8500 @ 800mhz
500gb SATAII HDD
Abit QuadGT
Vista64 Home Premium

Over the last month or so i am experiencing a largely decrease in performance, whether it be boot times, loading times, gfx performance ( i am fearing my gfx may be caput? (not overclocked at all..) having de-fragged/cleaned out old files nothing seems to get better.

Can anyone make any suggestions? Would a complete re-format be likely to resolve such an issue? Would simply installing a fresh copy of Vista (as opposed to completely wiping my HDD) suffice?

Apologies for the simplicity of my questions, 'i r noob' as it were.

On another note, i CONSISTENLY(!) have to keep setting my fan to the 30% manually after each re-boot, nothing will save the setting! Any ideas?

Kind regards,
Thomas

first off try running some benchmark apps like 3dmark06, superpi, vantage, hdtask (iirc is a hard disk tester) to give you some idea of what its doing at the moment.

run a check on the hard drive see if it has any errors

any changes been made to the system recently ?

using the latest drivers ?

what app are you using to set the fan speed ?

if it comes down to it i'd go for a fresh format over just a re install.

I find it's almost always quicker to just format than figure out the quirks of the windows operating system. I will try to find out on my own machine, but when at work formatting is the only way to know you've got rid of the problem, and there are benefits as you can save disk space and there's a whole lot less junk that accumulates, even with ccleaner and the like being run.

Just make sure you back up first.

Personally I would format and put a clean install of windows. Also only install software that you need, and not clog up your HD.
