"Notification of outstanding debt" /rant

Had a reply from 1&1 today

Thank you for contacting us.

I am sorry for this inconvenience, however, we had tried to contact you numerous times regarding these billing issues. We had sent a number of e-mails to the e-mail address on file and tried to freeze the account to get your attention. Unfortunately, the issue persisted for long enough to the point that we had sent the account to AFS, the collection agency. Please note that before the account entered collections, we had a far broader authority to assist you. Once an account is in collections, we are not allowed by our systems to access your invoices in any administrative way. We similarly cannot remove an account from collections unless it is proven that it is wholly the fault of 1and1 that the package was continued. Please resolve the issue with the collection agency and they will remove you from any list that they have. Thank you.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Funny how the last communication I had from them was 21/06/2013 to confirm my package was cancelled.

I got caught out by 1&1's auto renewal scam too, although actually I took over the domain from someone else and didn't realise this was how 1&1 operate.
After letting the domain lapse I got the same debt collector letter(s)

I've just ignored them, I'm not paying for something I didn't want and as far as I know they have stopped bothering to chase me.

The most positive thing I can do is to slate 1&1's dodgy practices as often as possible, to as many people as possible :)
Hello internet.

Just going to ignore them now, replied to their second copy+pasted email with;

If you continue to send me scripted responses to my emails then I shall simply ignore them.

To anybody reading this thread after Googling " Should I use 1&1 ". The answer is no.

To be honest, i've been a customer with 1&1 for 15+ years now. And, I find the service fantastic.

Last time I checked, when you sign up for any package with them it informs you that it will automatically renew unless canceled. Likewise you will have got at least 2, and sometimes 3 or 4 email reminders that the package renewal is coming up.

I've had a package roll over before which I meant to cancel, rang up their billing department, explained the situation, and they canceled the package (this was for an old dedicated server), didnt even bill me pro-rata either, just canceled it and credited my account for the full ammount.

I guess if you have gotten to the point of ignoring however many emails they must have sent you before freezing your account, its your own fault realy.

Way to go not reading the thread

I've had this on a vent server. I did actually click 1 month payment, yet it didnt say it auto renewed anywhere on the purchase. I cancelled the DD about 6 months down the line when I eventually noticed the payments comming out..
I phone the company, asked for a refund as I had not used the service nor was I told it was going to auto renew. They refused point blank to refund me and that it was just the norm of most companys to do this and I should have known, so I spoke to paypal, they agreed the auto renewal wasnt clarified and they issued a full refund directly back to me.

Think its quite shocking companys do this, on an opt out basis.. It should be an opt in basis. I remember once allowing my friend to purchase a month on xbox live with my card, which auto subcribed him into a contract on my card, un beknown to me, for months he thought he was getting free subscription, and i didnt realise till a few months later when i seen xbox payments twice and phoned microsoft.

They couldn't even transfer a domain name, after dozens of tickets with no help the domain expired and I bought it again via tsohost.

1&1 did this with me with a domain renewal in 2005. I just ignored them and they soon gave up.

My brother had this circa 2006 heh - IIRC the service was fine but they messed him around on the billing end and sent it to a collections agency over £6.99 that they knew full well was an ongoing dispute.

Essentially in his case he had actually fully cancelled with them but when the domain rolled over a couple of years after he'd cancelled they auto-renewed it then tried to charge him and wouldn't accept that he'd properly cancelled with them - fortunatly he had the paperwork and emails to prove it.

Girlfriend had a similar problem when she didn't cancel properly, ended up being billed for her renewal and then extra because she hadn't paid it within a certain time frame. They were fully within their rights to apply those charges, as it's what was agreed. I wrote a tactful but firm email and it the charges went away. I am so good.

As I said earlier in the thread. OP failed to read the terms and conditions of the contract he entered into. Claiming "Opt-out" auto-renewal is a scumbag way of doing things is irrelevant. The information regarding auto-renewal and your options regarding it are documented within those T&Cs.

Own fault - Pay up.
