"Notification of outstanding debt" /rant

I'd never use 1&1 myself, though I'd consider this issue user error. If you're getting a reduced price offer, it makes sense to read the T&C's as it's common sense that auto renewal is likely enabled by default.

I think in this instance, you should pay up and learn a lesson.

My brother had this circa 2006 heh - IIRC the service was fine but they messed him around on the billing end and sent it to a collections agency over £6.99 that they knew full well was an ongoing dispute.

Essentially in his case he had actually fully cancelled with them but when the domain rolled over a couple of years after he'd cancelled they auto-renewed it then tried to charge him and wouldn't accept that he'd properly cancelled with them - fortunatly he had the paperwork and emails to prove it.

Think they were chasing me for <£5. It probably cost them that in postage for the threat-o-grams.

Just to update this; as it had the domain for my dads business website, he paid the "outstanding debt" after confirming that the package/domain would be re-activated until 2015.
2 days later and I still don't have access to the control panel. I ring up 1&1 and ask why not and they say "It was cancelled and as a result you'll have to create a new package (paying £65 again)".

Time for the OFT I think.

Send another e-mail to the complaints e-mail address, cc'ing in Neil Hodson explaining in full from the very beginning.

Their e-mail addresses are in format of firstname.surname

He's the general manager for the UK business, and tends to take complaints very seriously... or at least used to when I worked there. You won't get anywhere with them over the phone I'm afraid.

Will give that a go then, thank you very much :)

edit: Email didn't go through; bounced back for firstname.surname @ 1and1.co.uk / .com unfortunately.

Ahh, sorry dude, he's still working there so must have changed his e-mail address. I'll see if I can find it out for you.

As I said earlier in the thread. OP failed to read the terms and conditions of the contract he entered into. Claiming "Opt-out" auto-renewal is a scumbag way of doing things is irrelevant. The information regarding auto-renewal and your options regarding it are documented within those T&Cs.

Own fault - Pay up.

Terms and conditions are for clarifications, not fraud. Legally, contracts must be fair. When a company uses dodgy methods like auto-renewal rather than providing an actual service of merit they forefeit any contract as far as I am concerned.

No problem, I think the issue may nearly be resolved, I've received an email from the "Care-Taker" team offering a refund, so will see if they keep to their word and sort it out :)

Thanks anyway!

EDIT: Refund should be back to me in 7 days. They're transferring the domain to another provider I use. Finally got there in the end!
