A huge jump for the PS3 and good numbers all round; if surprising PS2 ones. Better software numbers for the Wii though the 360 is still shifting more units.

Im not disputing the figures but something cant be right surely?

The wii sold 1 million units (near enough) in November alone, and yet in Japan they have "only" sold 4 million to date? Im just flabbergasted there is such a massive difference (after all I would have thought Japan being their home region would have by far sold the most, even in comparison to population size)

Maybe Im looking at the figures wrong, but there just seems to be a gigantic gulf between the two (probably not making any sense lol)

Has anyone got the details of the asia/euro numbers ?

No official data for EU/Others but often countries release there own data, this is about the best we can go on.

Also of note the PS3/360 software sales are about the same even with the 360 larger user base.

Woah pretty bad for PS3 again, even a 360 game in the Jap top 10 and no PS3 game? amazing really considering how poor the 360 sells there, and the highest PS3 game at 15 in the UK? what a turnaround in fortunes.

Also of note the PS3/360 software sales are about the same even with the 360 larger user base

Eh where?

Let the fanboy arguments BEGIN!

As usual we see Nintendo dancing on top of the sales charts. I wonder how much more the lead would be if they could actually produce more units.

Christmas figures will definitely be interesting.

when will the ps2 stop??

the thing has already made sony a fortune and continues to recoup the ps3's losses.

probably the most impressive console of a few generations.

Nintendo dominate, Sony suck. Business as usual.

This is Sony's spin on the NPD figures.

NPD: 1.5 Million PlayStations sold in November

+ Posted by Philip Rosenberg // Senior Vice President, Sales and Business Development, SCEA

Hello everyone, the new NPD sales numbers are out, and I wanted to share some new sales stats that have us excited here at PlayStation central.

For the month of November, PlayStation hardware unit sales exceeded 1.5 million units, including close to half-a-million PLAYSTATION 3 consoles. That’s means nearly 4 times as many PS3s ended up in North American homes in November than the month before.

A slew of incredible titles this holiday season has definitely been a factor in that growth: Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Rock Band, Assassin’s Creed, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, Heavenly Sword, and Pain (did I miss any?) should keep everyone busy well into the new year. And our new ad campaign has helped get the word out that PLAYSTATION 3 is THE gamers’ console.

As far as the PlayStation Portable is concerned, a lot of dudes decided to “Get Your Own” in November. NPD reports over 567,000 PSPs were sold in November, thanks in large part to the popularity of the slimmer, lighter PSP, the debut of the PLAYSTATION Store for PC, and critically acclaimed titles like Beats, Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, and Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow.

While the PS3 has just passed its first birthday, the PlayStation 2 is still kicking hard seven years after launch. The PS2 remains the best-selling gaming platform ever released, with nearly half-a-million more adding to the system’s greatness in the month of November. The release of games such as BUZZ! The Mega Quiz, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, and the limited-edition white PS2 bundled with SingStar Pop means that the PS2 will continue to be a favorite for millions of gamers. [time played stat?]

We know that PlayStation.Blog readers are all about the games – and these numbers are relevant to existing PlayStation owners as well. With the rise of online multiplayer games like Warhawk, Syphon Filter: Combat Ops. and this week’s big-buzz release Unreal Tournament 3, thousands more players can mean a longer, better gaming experience.

So if you’re one of the hundreds of thousands of new members to the PlayStation family, welcome – and thank you! And for those who have been around for awhile, enjoy the influx of new gamers to play with and against!

I am not sure when the figures are counted exactly in USA but I think this last period covers 4 weeks with the PS3 at it's lower price, so surely this was the best time for it to overtake the 360 in USA. Sony USA at least must be disappointed.

The only ray of light I see for Sony is that overall, In November anyway, the extra that PS3 sells over the 360 in Japan, added to the USA figures, added to a ROW estimate which shows roughly equal sales for both (hard to gauge due to lack of concrete data) means both consoles are probably selling an equal number worldwide in total. (maybe with ps3 selling more, but the price cut is too recent to see if this trend would continue). I think both consoles will enter 2008 with roughly equal weekly/monthly worldwide sales.

The market in Japan has moved heavily towards handheld gaming, thanks mainly to the DS. Every home console now plays second fiddle to the DS, including Nintendo's own Wii. I can't recall the exact percantage of the population in Japan that own a DS, but it's a crazily high figure (upwards of 50%).

EDIT

It's not 50%, but it has been predicted that it will be 89% by 2011, which is insane.

On another note, those PS3 sales only look impressive if you don't take into account the time of year.

I don't think it's just handheld gaming at the base of the market, I still feel there's a company/cultural loyalty thing going on.

Both Nintendo and Sony, Japanese companies at heart both create the only hand held games consoles. And the sales in japan are huge! aswell as PS3s being shifted in Japan also being higher than anywhere else.

Actually it's probably more like 13-15% as in the middle of the year it was around 10%. It's still crazy though considering the number of people that live in Japan.

Nearly 500 thousand a month is still good for the PS3 though, all things considered. High price compared to the competition, relatively lower software library and confusing SKU range. Price drops, new big hitters and the eventual phase-out of the 60GB will eventually smooth out the console's direction and I would predict that 2008 will be a solid year, maybe finally routinely getting at least 300-400 thousand every month. All the big games such as Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII and God of War III are slated for the next year which will undoubtably give the PS3 a huge boost, especially if the marketing department can plan a smooth and spread out launch cycle for each of those games. This is in contrast to the other two consoles' poor lineups which would basically swing hardware and software sales generally in favor of the PS3.

They also need to get that kick ass American advertising campaign over hear too, With the music from Saliva on the video. Best Console advert ever, and better than the current Sony adverts.

Great adverts
