November NPD

Sony definitely needs to sort out their 'This is Living' advertising. I have seen about four or five different Playstation 3 adverts now, and not a single one of them contained any gameplay footage. It also had a double-edged effect of making many people convinced that it was all just a load of self-pretentious nonsense, soaked in hubris; it certainly didn't help stem off Sony's existing image problems. Apparently the advertising campaign with the dancers and entertainers have already been stopped due to massive negative feedback.

That Saliva advert is definitely the way to go. If you showed any old Joe that, they would be immensely impressed and consider for a few seconds at least that the PS3 really is a next-generation console worthy of its price tag. The older adverts didn't do that. It's quite amazing how TV advertising can influence sales; just look at Microsoft's marketing and their high software tie-in ratio.

how can that many people still not have a PS2..... no way are those figures legit (my opinion and based on nothing but disbelief)

its all about marketing, nothing else

PS2 was cool
WII is cool

thats all there is to it, to win the mass market

gamers will pick on knowledge, mass market picks on cool

Japanese weekly hardware sales...
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=31533

1. Nintendo DS: 168,267
2. Nintendo Wii: 115,057
3. PlayStation Portable: 91,481
4. PlayStation 3: 38,123
5. PlayStation 2: 11,987
6. Xbox 360: 8876

Interesting quote:

Lifetime sales figure now show that in the past week the Wii broke through the 4 million barrier in Japan - the PS3 sits at just under 1.5 million and the Xbox 360 just under 500,000 - while the PSP crashed through the 7 million mark.

PS3 has already outsold 360 3-fold, even PS2 is still outselling it. :o

PS2 is still outselling PS3 worldwide too LOL

I doubt MS should bother with the Japanese market, clearly they are never going to accept an American console

i dont think sony will be too bothered by the ps2's continuing success as long as it keeps selling like it is sony's gaming division have got a chunk more headroom.

Also of note the PS3/360 software sales are about the same even with the 360 larger user base.

Where are you looking? Xbox360 releases are battering PS3 releases.
Assassins Creed was 3x as many sales on Xbox360.
1.57m Call of Duty 4's on Xbox360, 444k on PS3.

Only 2 PS3 titles in the list (those above), 4 Xbox360 ones.

Hahaha, I love the article by the Snr VP at SCEA. Quoting PS3 sales figures is meaningless when they're not being compared to the competition. And saying, "a lot of dudes decided to “Get Your Own” in November." makes him sound like my untrendy uncle who tries so desperately to be trendy. :D

Sir Howard Stringer doesn't fare much better in today's Grauniad:

Stringer said: "I'm glad that the last few weeks have generated excitement about PlayStation 3. Everyone's stopped talking about it the way they were six months ago.
er... not here on OcUK, they haven't
"I'm happy the Wii seems to be running a bit short of hardware. The PlayStation 3 will come into its own because its [high-end games] are infinitely more fun, demanding and exciting.
So, he's glad Nintendo can't meet demand because it means people might look at the PS3 instead. Not a very smart strategy, imo.

I don't know where the journalist got his data but he quotes the following sales figures in the article:

Nintendo, which had shipped 13.2m Wii consoles by October, expects the total to rise to 17.5m units by the end of March. Sony, by contrast, had sold 5.6m PS3s worldwide by the end of September, behind Microsoft, which has sold 13.4m Xbox 360 consoles since its launch two years ago.
Has the 360 overtaken the Wii in overall sales?

I would actually say that the general opinion of the PS3 is changing on these very forums. People still don't like the ports that should remain nameless. But thats because you cant go back in time. Unfortunately those ports will remain in PS3s past forever now.

But the general opinion on these forums seems to be the PS3 is improving.

Which is far from what the opinion was 6 months ago, Where everyone saw it as a blatent failure with no chance of success.

Oh and it had no games. :p

Looks like MS should forget the Xbox 360 in Japan and make a handheld device. Everything in Japan is about smallness and portability.

....Yet remains the only non subjective method of measurement...

Maybe, but those three consoles differ in age, in price, in audience and in games available - all which affect 'what is better' and also influence their sales.

For example, Wii sells more because it's cheaper, it's marketed towards more people and it's a gimmick - it's "something different".

Perhaps I should say "only looking at sales figures" is misguided, as it does not give a complete analysis of a console's 'good-ness' and usually serves to simply get the fanboys excited and get them to start flaming.

I used to think the PS3 was vile, now it's getting 3 or 4 times more playtime than my 360.
