how can that many people still not have a PS2..... no way are those figures legit (my opinion and based on nothing but disbelief)

erm... well there are 6 billion people in the world and Sony has sold something like 130 million PS2's - I think the amount of people who do won a PS2 are still in a minority!

I would actually say that the general opinion of the PS3 is changing on these very forums. People still don't like the ports that should remain nameless. But thats because you cant go back in time. Unfortunately those ports will remain in PS3s past forever now.

But the general opinion on these forums seems to be the PS3 is improving.

Which is far from what the opinion was 6 months ago, Where everyone saw it as a blatent failure with no chance of success.

Oh and it had no games. :p

Your absolutly right, I have seen a steady stream of people change there views on the PS3, I predict it will be much like the Vista thing, everyone and there Uncle swears they will never touch that piece of bloated turd.
And of course a year a two down the line they are all merrily typing away at there Vista machines :)

Xbox360 is smalled than the PS3.

yeah but it doesnt look as cool

i read something the other day though that one of the execs in ps3 land were unsure how they were going to market it for 2008....
either
a) games-machine
b) multi-media device

Feels more like b to me. Whereas the 360 doesnt have this "market perception" problem at all. Its a games machine. Market perception needs to be strong and focused or else it will limit the product's market penetration (as we all know :D)

Is the sense of nationalism the only reason the 360 hasn't taken off in Japan? Are they the same about other products, cars or cigarettes or music...?

Pretty much yeah, have you seen the Japanese music charts? LOL

Maybe you can tell us then how the 360 can be a massive success in every other territory apart from this one, are they a different breed of gamers? I don't think so as most of their big games are big in the west as well, so can't be that...they like the same games as we do here (although they don't like FPS so much).

Heh, I just listened to some Japanese chart music... it wasn't a nice experience. It seems that the Beatles are also still popular in Japanese karaoke bars too :p

Maybe the Japanese just aren't happy with the reliability issues.... perhaps having a console that is liable to breaking is something completely alien to them.

This is something I mentioned a couple of years ago about how they were marketing the PS3. It's definitely been marketed as b, but Sony's main base are most definitely console buyers. I can't help but think they'd do a lot better to make it more of a games machine than a media machine.
The PS3 was all about the success of Blu-Ray, Sony are a company that are financially struggling and have been for a while.
I believe 3 years ago the only division making profit was the Playstation brand, last year only the Playstation brand and Bravia brand were profitable (and this year the Playstation brand isn't due to the cost of PS3).
As a result Sony have tried to invent new technology, be it UMD, Memory Stick or ATRAC as a way to make money from releases. The latest effort is Blu-Ray. Sony are in need of a profitable technology so that would go a long way to explaining the media playback over game playback of the console.

Maybe but was the same with the Xbox, and that thing was a tank :D

Dreamcast was 7 years old, discontinued and still outsold Xbox in Japan on its release week :D so saying the Dreamcast bombed in Japan seems like wishful thinking :)
