Now this is FAST!!!!

This has been possible on knoppix linux for a while now. Its a live version of linux that can run off a cd, however theres an option to copy the contents of the CD to the RAM so it runs entirely from memory. Very fast!

Yeah i dont know why they'd want to look into DDR2 ram for the next version, they could just use DDR400 which would still be considerably faster then SATA2

also if they did use DDR2 it would stop being afordable as i checked DDR2 prices and they're extortionate!

what we need is about an 8Gb ramdrive running DDR400 ram and compatable with SATA2 because in the future a lot of people are going to have DDR400 ram left over and just lieing arround when AMD make the jump to DDR2 with socket MQ2, it just makes so much sence that they probably wont do it =/

DDR2 is cheaper than plain DDR nowadays. what i want is for a ramdrive not to be limited to SATA or SATA 2 since both are pathetically slow compared to what the RAM you're putting onto the thing is capable of.

they should (IMO) make a PCI-E controller and make use of that kind of bandwidth. speeds of a GB/sec would be great :D

I'm guessing you've got a raptor raid setup?

no actually, ive got a single Hitachi 7k250 sata:) my ati motherobard doesnt need any drivers, which is the only reason i can think of as to why it boots so fast. Whatever the reason is, its entirely possible:)

hmmm

Well I think we all just found a use for our old DDR ram once we upgrade to DDR2 when those awesome Conroe's come on the go.

What motherboard, CPU, RAM & what you got starting up??

I've dreamed of something like this ever since my first PC in 1989 and it got me looking at my savings. I then thought "Hold on, I never turn my PC off, all my applications load in very fast from my Raptor so whats the point?".
The real question is : how many of you turn your PC's off to make this a viable purchase?

Looking at the test results reveals these times :

Boot Time Comparison

Windows Boot Time (Lower is Better)
Gigabyte i-RAM (4GB)
9.12s
Western Digital Raptor (74GB)
14.06s

Think I'll stick with my Raptor because I can wait 5 seconds every month or so.

It's not just boot times that will significantly improve!! Windows access's little files from the C: drive quite frequently (Pagefile, Prefetch, DLL's ...etc)
So the whole windows environment will be far quicker and snappier when using one of these RamDrives.
