I'm listening to Satyagraha, an opera by Philip Glass for the first time all the way through and the hairs on my neck are standing on end.

I've had Einstein on the Beach (OK) and Akhnaten (breathtaking) for a long time so I've no idea why I've missed this. I tried to record it off Sky Arts when it was on the other week but my DVD crapped out half way through.

It's got a lot of Koyaanisqatsi in it but goddamn it's magnificent!

Going over some older lessons - simple scales yet very effective.

A man goes to a pacific island. He notices the constant sound of drumming. He asks a native how long the drumming will go on. The native says "very bad when drumming stops." Later that day the drumming is still going on. He asks another native when the drumming will stop. "Very bad when drumming stops," he says, and runs off. After a couple of days the man had enough. He grabs a native, slams him against a tree, and shouts, "What happens when the drumming stops?" The native replies, "Bass solo."
