I've got the really old GPO box and wiring in my house. Has anyone here had BT fit an NTE5 socket and did it improve your speeds? I'm thinking of doing this to improve my speeds but I don't want to spend a fortune! Would having this done dramatically alter my speeds? I'm currently with Be and I get download speeds of about 9 megs and I'm about 500 m from the exchange.

Hiya

Is that straight line distance? Sometimes the line length can be miles longer.

It can make a big difference, but it might be the wiring more than the box. I would try one of the NTE5 filtered face plates.

Have you tried it in the master socket that comes into the house, not sure how these work with the old wiring.

My whole house is kitted out with phone points with built in microfilters, and the master socket has one too (the NTE5.) Can't comment on the speeds for you as this was done as part of a renovation job when I first bought it and before I moved in, but it does at least keep things tidy with no filters hanging out of the wall!

The cable comes into my house near the front door and is attached to one of those old GPO boxes. Then 2 sets of cabling go from there to the sockets (1 upstairs, 1 down). They just like like extension sockets (not the NTE5 versions) and the 1 downstairs has a resistor in it so I assume that's the master socket. I've tried both of them and get the same speeds. I can't put the NTE5 filtered face plates on the sockets cos they are different and wouldn't fit. I'm going to ring BT and see what they say, no doubt they'll want to charge me a fortune to install a socket!

I got BT to change my old style master socket to the new type. It didnt cost a penny, its a free upgrade.

Improved my connection by hooking up to the BT test socket behind the faceplate. My profile went from 3.5mb to 6.5mb :D

I spoke to BT yesterday and they quoted me £175 + VAT for changing the socket to an NTE5 one! I'll try again today and see if I can get a different answer from someone else.

No joy getting it done for free. They said because it's the internal wiring it has to be paid for although they did quote me £116 + VAT this time. I'm reluctant to pay it just in case it does nothing for my speeds!

I believe the master socket is BT's responsibility, however any internal wiring is down to the occupant

I cannot for the life of me belive they want to charge you for this, I only got mine changed the other week. You are on about the master socket, where the phone wire actually comes into the house?

Like I said in my post above, because my master socket was the old type(over 20yrs old)I was told it is a free upgrade. I'll try to post some pics of what I mean.

I got it changed from this

EDIT: Im not sure if this will help, but I did say to BT on the phone, that I wanted to request the free upgrade for the master socket.

Fobbed off again! They told me that unless the socket is causing a problem I will be charged and socket's are not changed free of charge. We did have a problem on the line a couple of weeks ago but that has been fixed, might have to wait a couple more weeks and phone again.

Yeh you have been fobbed of mate, mine got changed not over a month ago free of charge plus there was nothing wrong with it either. I suppose you have just been unlucky with whoever you have spoken to. You could leave it a few weeks and try again, and hopefully you might get to speak to someone who is a bit more sympathetic
