Hello,

I have got Ntl broadband and having a few problems.

I was on the package that cost me £37.99 a month, not sure what speed that is.

I called them about 2 weeks ago and got them to drop it to the cheapest speed, whatever that is.

However for the past few days the internet is very slow, loading videos or downloading :( Also it wont download my e-mails keeps asking for password

I have made sure its the right password but it keeps asking for it again.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

My 10Mb NTL has been a joke the last couple of weeks first time in about 7 years I have had problems getting disconnected at night and allsorts of problems

Hopefully and fingers crossed its down to the fact they are getting ready to role out 20Mb when I spoke to them last month they said sometime in December.

What modems are you all using? I've got an old Terayon model and an NTL engineer is coming later today as I've had problems.

I've read that many people have had problems with the Terayon models since NTL did the QAM256 upgrade on certain areas of the network.

have not been getting speeds over 5mb on a 10mb line for a couple of weeks now from 18.00 onwards, picks up after 00.00.

Traffic shaping has been switched on between these times, depends on what your doing. It shouldnt effect your web viewing speed, just things like p2p.

Not noticing any speed deficits here. Using newsgroups, my old mans 4Mb connection is still maxing out and a few days ago my 10Mb connection back at home was still fine.

What areas are you in? 4Mb in Leics (uses the silver NTL modem) and 10Mb in Notts (using the small blue modem) no problems.

I've just waved goodbye to my old Terayon and said hello to a new NTL:250 modem.
The engineer confirmed there is a problem with the Terayon models and there has been since the introduction of the 10mb service regardless of your current service speed.

I have the old Terayon modem, had it for years since NTL was first installed.

Should i give Ntl a call ?

Not sure if this is related but since NTL and Telewest are one company now it may possibly be. I'm on the Blueyonder 2mb line and while my downstream bandwidth seems to be fine, my upstream bandwidth seems to capped to around 30-90kbps, when it should be 256kbps.

I just hope they're not purposely capping my speeds and its just a temporary issue, but eitherway its annoying as hell.

The two provisioning systems (NTL/TW) aren't linked in the way you are suggesting and are not going to be for quite a while, your uplink speed is probably related to what you are downloading or if you share the connection what others on it are doing.

My connection has been great ever since the modem was replaced. I listen to a lot of pirate radio using Winamp and it had been constantly rebuffering but it's been perfect tonight.

Ring tech support and tell them you've got problems.

I'm not downloading anything at all and I still get these poor upload speeds. I even tried plugging the modem ethernet cable directly to my computer and I still get poor upload speeds. I also tried the same with two other computers with the same results, hence I'm almost 100% sure its either Telewest doing this or my modem is faulty.

Whether the NTL/TW services are linked or not, the service I'm getting has definitely gone downhill since the merger. :(

Will be on the phone to support tomorrow.

Its taking agers to load now, ntlworld.com has just taken 3 mins to load !

Quality of the service i am getting has gone downhill,as i said i am on the 10mb and the speed is very inconsistant in the evening...I do not use p2p.
Take this forum for example during the day the pages load instantly, this evening there is a pause and i have to wait for the page to load,i shouldnt have to wait for a page to load during normal web surfing whilst doing nothing else with the connection on a 10mb connection

I have had my Terayon Modem changed today and the engineer said that i was the fifth person he had replaced modem's for today. All were using the old Terayon one's.

My ping has been very unstable for the last month or so, with packetloss too.

Tonight it has been absolute tripe, huge pl, even browsing in painful with pages timing out etc.

Phoned up support and after 20mins they finally arranged for an engineer to visit as they found a problem with my line. Well she seemed to suggest it was the modem but I find that hard to believe as my connection is a bit better outside of peak hours. I could have told them that in 5s, instead of going through all the questions, switching the power off and on and all that other nonsense I've tried 20 times already.

22:13 <HangTime> Ping statistics for 80.4.226.129:
22:13 <HangTime> Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 80, Lost = 20 (20% loss),
22:13 <HangTime> Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
22:13 <HangTime> Minimum = 9ms, Maximum = 421ms, Average = 106ms

^this is what I'm paying £35/month for. It's actually worse than 20% pl in reality.

Nasty. With my connection being 'utilised' I get:

Ping statistics for 80.4.226.129:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 13ms, Maximum = 16ms, Average = 14ms

^That IP is my gateway - so your ping will actually be lower than what you quoted.

Tonight is no better and tbh for browsing it's arguably worse than isdn due to having to refresh pages so often:

Ping statistics for 80.4.226.129:
Packets: Sent = 30, Received = 27, Lost = 3 (10% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 7ms, Maximum = 286ms, Average = 113ms

Unless ntl can fix this back to a stable 6-10ms with 0pl as it should be then I'm probably going to cancel my contract and look at getting DSL instead. They've foolishly put their prices up by 1p which means I can cancel without seeing out my 12 month contract :)
