Number of Previous Owners

you'll get stick for that post jez

Heaven forbid. "HE LET IT GET WET ???"

"NEXT YOU'LL BE TELLING ME THE HOSUE WAS RENTED !!!"

The point wasn't that, it was that he was parking a CL on the street. Generally that is not the way a 6 figure car is treated and it really did reflect in this cars condition compared with the garaged examples. This goes back to Fox's point, to this owner is wasn't a 6-figure car, it was a ~£20k car, rather different prospect and why it didn't have the care i would expect lavished upon it.

i've recently bought a 10 year old car with 6 previous owners so not all that different from the OP and it's still runs and idles nicely, even with 97k on the clock so i can't see why how many owners it's had can make it a bad car

Different with a proper enthusiasts car such as a DC2. It's the type of car that changes hands once a year between enthusiasts who are part of owners clubs that maintain them meticulously.

They will sell on after they've had their fun and the smokey engine and honda rot starts getting to them though ;)

i got your point at least :D

was wondering how long it would be before somebody said something about the wet comment though.

Its actually a completely fair point when it comes to Merc's made from what i can only assume to be a special alloy of steel and cheese :D

not talking about the dc2 as i've sold that now :( the car i'm referring to is a cheapy megane

Is this a universal thing with Mercs now? I only ask because a mate just got rid of a W209 CLK with nigh-on terminal rot. It hadn't been in any accident and then shoddily repaired, it hadn't spent years in a seaside resort....it just rotted away.

The guy is looking at an SLK in the future as well, I'd have thought he'd have had his fill of rot boxes by now.

Numbers of owners depends on the type of car.

A sports coupe for example will typically have more owners than a Family hatchback.

Why? Running costs (petrol, service, spare parts) can be far higher than expected resulting in an early sale.

My 15 year old Celica GT has had 9 owners i think.

I wouldn't really say that's a fair point when a lot of Mercs from 04 onwards have ceramic coating on the paint which makes it rock ******* solid! Either way ours hasn't spent one night outside yet:D

As for the OP, I was looking at Imprezas for months and there were a couple that came up which I thought, that looks like a friggen good example, 30,000 miles, 2004 but had 5 owners which totally put me off. The one I ended up with had it from brand new making me the second owner, this guy was completely anal about his car to the point where he put rubber mats on his STi mats to keep them clean. But again, it depends on what sort of car you are buying and for what purpose.

If you read the thread you would see that cheap, old cars is a different case from newer, more expensive cars. Even if Acidhell2 disagrees.

Unfortunately it is fairly universal between approximately '98 and '04, i would never let it put me off the high end models though as to be honest, they have no competition really so there is little other choice. I can understand why your friend would like to stick with them dispite their problems.

See, thats how a car like an S55K should be treated, in a garage, and kept clean. Not parked on the street picking up kerbing and getting muddy and splashed from passing traffic and pedestrians. I'd always want a previous owner like your dad which will generally rule out any cars with more than a couple of owners. Only problem with limiting to 04+ cars, is that they are rather big money, massive electrical and structural improvments sadly do not come cheap :)

Much like the Mondeo ST220 the OP is talking about, then.

The ST220 isn't your average Mondeo, so multiple owners isn't necessarily a bad thing - providing the condition and history are OK.

They're also very thirsty - something that some of the owners may not have realised at the time (they may well have looked at the book figures for fuel consumption, thought it'd be OK, then actually found it was nowhere near!)

As always - if it's not a massive journey to have a look - go and have a look, but, number of owners can sometimes give you an idea as to whether it might be viable or not to go and view.

No, not really. Infact if anything its even worse as the cheaper they get the cheaper they fall into the hands of people who want a 'well fast car innit' then move it on a few months later. The more people like this who own the car, the nicer its going to be.

My 1995 Golf has only had 3 owners, the last of which being my mum and it looks shagged :D Mechanically its spot on but cosmetically its firmly past its best. If I had the time and ability it should have a 1.8T in it :)

Low owners IMO is probably more important than mileage. I'm yet again thinking of buying another Impreza and it has to be sub 100K miles and about 3 or 4 owners maximum. Over 5 is a put off (its going to be 10 years+ after all)

On the other hand, the last Impreza I bought I was only the 2nd owner and I sold it within a few months and there was nothing wrong with it.

Best to just go and have a look but work on the basis your not going to buy. If you do buy it will be because your happy with the car itself, not its paperwork/history (although still very important)
