NVIDIA 4000 Series

Think this is the driver. I read something yesterday about the 3000 series with same issue.

Possibly. I tried disabling hardware acceleration and it did not work. The issue seems to be the Desktop Window Manager process, which is part of Windows, but GPU usage drops to normal levels when I close Chrome or Edge. I've sent a help request to Google:

I am seeing 100% GPU utilisation with a Zotac RTX 4090 Trinity with hardware acceleration on or off. Chrome is version 106.0.5249.11 and is the 64 bit version. The issue also occurs with Microsoft Edge (also fully up to date), so I can rule out extensions. No tabs need be open.

In Task Manager it seems that the culprit is the Desktop Window Manager but if I close Chrome the GPU usage drops.

Reboots at all stages.

I have tried disabling GPU acceleration in the settings. I have gone into chrome://flags and disabled everything remotely GPU related, all without success.

Windows 10 x64 is fully up to date. Nvidia Geforce driver 522.25. I have tried reinstalling the video driver without success.

I previously had a RTX 3090 FE installed without problems.

Quick one, installed my zotak 4090 oc. I’ve only had msi cards before but it looks amazing in real life.

Having slight issue my cpu use doesn’t go above 1-3 percent in games.

I’m using a hx850i, issue I have is my motherboard needs two power cables to the cpu. I had to unplug one to get enough power for gpu (needs four cables - only had three spare).

My psu just doesn’t have enough slots for me to plug in another cable. Just ordered an hx1200 is has one extra slot so can plug in the second cpu cable (that I removed). Assume it’s reasonable to conclude this will fix the issue?

Thanks all

Sounds like it will.

I don't have a 4090, but I had a similar issue on my system with my 240hz g9. Dropping the refresh rate to 120hz sorted it, I assume it was a driver issue. Don't know what screen you have but just a thought.
It was the same windows process causing the gpu usage.

I tried setting my main screen to both 120 Hz and 60 Hz without any effect. But I jumped the gun in blaming Chrome. GPU usage maxxes when I open the start menu! Or have any window showing other than Task Manager.

So, for £700 if I can get a 4080 I think it's not a to bad of a deal. I won't pay a penny more. I would rather buy used that go higher. I'm not skint, or loaded. But I think you have to seta personal limit on things.

It's like the wife orded a new mattress for £799..... I was like, send that back. Maybe I'm getting older. Or I just think my money is worth more to me.

I feel like there's a line between worth and wasting for that little extra

It doesnt need 4, 3 cables is 100% power, the 4th is for overclocking the power limit

plug 2 back to your motherboard and 3 to the card

Yeah but you spend a lot of your life sleeping so better to invest in a quality mattress. A GPU is way down the list of quality of life investments.
