NVIDIA 4000 Series

Nvidia knew that people would pay a lot more for the top card, hence why 3090 was double the 3080 price but 10% more fps.
This gen they've made the cost/performance linear between 80 & 90 hence even 80 FE not selling.
They're so greedy they even ignore their own market research!

Their marketing is totally designed to push you up tiers. So right now they have launched two cards. One is such a terrible proposition that normally people would just say "fuggit" and get the higher card.

The problem is he hasn't factored in that there is a global recession right now. Or that miners are no longer there to artificially inflate the prices. Or that people are no longer stuck at home, getting paid to sit there. Most of my mates got furloughed and spent it all on computer stuff. Because they were bored stuck at home.

It was the perfect storm for Nvidia and AMD to rake it in. And rake it in they did. However, like all "good" things it was sure to end. And I don't think Nvidia planned on that. It certainly doesn't seem like it with the cards and prices they have launched.

I think right about now he is finding out how much people like to be manipulated by a cunning runt.

According to DF its not even linear, the 4090 is just flat out better bang for buck which is just weird as usually its a case of pay a premium for the best and get better value lower down the stack.

That is a deliberate sales tactic dude. It is called "rail roading" in sales. See it as a road. At a point you then squeeze two roads into one. With the end result being a 4090 sale.

I worked in sales for many years, until I just couldn't stomach it any longer. We would sell a product where you got like, one. However, it was a much better value to buy 6 in a pack. Using the same tactic. You make the entry level so poor that the stupid price one seems like better value.

That is all well and good in a thriving market and economy. Which we now just totally ain't in. All of every technique and dirty trick has been smashed into GPUs over the years. Like taking SLi connectors off of the lower end cards, etc etc etc. It has just gotten exponentially worse every single gen.

Mid range cards used to be amazing. Every gen they would get so much faster. Now? they are utter tosh. A snack. Akin to a 99p cheeseburger. One burp and you are hungry again.

I look forward to buying one for £800 in the not too distant future.

£800 is still too much for these, the max they should be sold for is £700-750, don't fall for the 3080 10GB scam at £650 as hardly anyone got one at that price and the real street prices were very different and the people that did get them at that no matter what they say were lucky and have seen many cry it was easy to get a 3080fe, no it wasn't and you were just very lucky.

Also the 3080 10GB at £650 was a rip off too as it had planned obsolescence written all over it from day one, in 2020 10GB was at the limit of being ok for a "flagship" as nvidia called it, their previous flagships I will remind you from 4 years before the 3080 had 11GB the 1080ti and even the 2080ti 2 years before it. Nvidia scammed everyone into thinking 10GB was enough knowing when their next generation comes out it will not be enough for the latest games or games that get updated with RT or more RT features as we are seeing now, just look at some benchmarks now, the 3080 10GB has half the frame rates of a 3080 12GB ... WHY? VRAM is not enough and Nvidia knew this.

All owners of 3080 10GB should really not worry about this as they did get a bargain at £650 at the time and the world mess then even with Nvidia's hidden Easter egg of the low VRAM, enjoy what you have and don't fall for Nvidia's and AMD's games this generation and turning down a few settings with 99% of these games you will see no difference in real world. We need to stop telling these companies it is ok for them to do these games to us as their customers now, no industry is so disgraceful now apart from the energy companies in our country again taking us all for a ride. Look at these companies profits and ask why are they crying they want more from you all the time, especially while they are making record breaking profits never seen before in their industry.. Why ? Because they are ripping off their customers now and reality is our government is the leading problem in this and allowing them to get away with it and to a point this government is even encouraging it. Sorry that's the reality of this whole situation and I'm disgusted by it all.

I completely agree with all of that, that's exactly why £800 is my absolute maximum. And even then I think I'm being ripped off.
Prices are going up on everything, there is no getting away from that, but nvidia have took greed to a whole new level and they deserve to loss a small fortune over it

What you describe is rampant in supermarkets like 1 for £1 or 2 for £1.20 or 100g for £1 or 200g for £1.20.

But in the GPU industry this is new, if its profitable as you said though it will be here for good.

I wonder how long its going to be for TPU who ran all their VRAM tests saying 10 gig is absolutely fine, when they do the same on the 4000 series suddenly change their mind as it will suit Nvidia's new agenda.

The problem for me though is I dont mind turning down shadows, fog etc. from the often over bloated ultra settings, but turning down textures is a bit of a no go for me, I am really sensitive to texture quality. Textures unfortunately are a prime VRAM consumer.

There were loads of pictures on reddit of people posting a photo of a furlough cheque and another photo of a 3080

Despite all the outrage on the prices, the 4090 truly is a beast. Just finished a gaming session on Cyberpunk and despite using 1.78x DLDSR and downscaling to 3440x1440, which is actually a resolution 10% higher than 4k, I was still seeing 70 plus FPS at all time, with maxed out RT including GI. Add the motion clarity, brighter color volume and the incredible dynamic range of HDR on top with an oled and it looks incredible.

It really is powerful in a way the 3090/3080 Ti were not when they came out.

2080 Ti -> 3090 = +57%
3090 -> 4090 = +56%

The ray tracing leap is much higher. My anecdotal benchmark in the market areas of CyberPunk showed the 3080 Ti at 48 fps at 4k with DLSS performance mode and RT Ultra. The same area on my 4090 runs at 70 fps with DLSS Quality and RT Psycho settings. It's the most demanding area in the whole game

Supposedly, the RT performance delta between 20xx and 30xx is actually higher than between 30xx and 40xx series but I don't have any definitive numbers to hand. Sure - the 4090 is a fantastic card for Cyberpunk, but then RT-wise, that was always a forward looking game (like Crysis in its day).

Investigating Nvidia's Raytracing Performance

I think you will find that the increase is not what you expect. Watch the video.

Numbers above in the video.

4090 is cpu bottlenecked in that test so it's pointless
They revised their graphs after testing for CPU bottlenecks no?

The outrage is justified, the 4090 FE is £300 more here in the UK than what a 3090 sold for and has had features removed that professionals use like NVLINK, these cards should not be called 4090s but 4080ti if we look back at 3080ti again not having NVLINK. The 90 class was sold to us as a Titan replacement, meaning professional use, professional use means NVLINK. These are gaming cards being sold for £300 more and an important pro feature removed. The uplift is nothing special too even compared to previous generations.

Same VRAM as 3090/3090ti, same uplift as we saw from 2080ti to 3090/ti but reduced features for pro users and no increase in VRAM from previous gen too. They are a downgrade from previous generation and costing £300 more. That's where your outrage comes from for the 4090.

The 4080 is another story that is even more comical, starting with a doubling of price from previous 3080 and on a smaller chip AD103 compared to GA102. There is your outrage for the 4080. Nvidia.. the scam artists doubling down now on their gaming cards by doubling prices or removing features the card was originally targetting users for. We have entered a new world of business in all industries recently, zero ethics is the new way forward and testing how far they can make people pay before they say no or in the case of the energy companies how quickly they can come cut off people that can't pay and stick them on prepay meters or a smart meter that they can turn into a prepay meter without giving you notice or again cutting you off with it. Do you not see all the games being played out ? Soon they will be cutting peoples water supply too because they can't afford to pay their new rates because you know even water is now magically costing more even when it falls out of the sky.

Anyways .. reasons for outrage are obvious and well deserved.
