Nvidia 480 Flickering

Hi guys,

I'm not sure if it's my screen (3008WFP) or my card (or both) but I'm getting some major flickering going on during games, just in win or even when booting during POST.

A mate of mine tells me this is fairly common with nvidia cards but it's a major issue as it's actually making me feel physically queezy. It happens every now and again for a few seconds or sometimes constantly for hours. Rebooting doesn't seem to help much.

Is my 480 dodgy? It's not o/c. I'm running 197.55.

I have a new replacement 3008WFP arriving today so I can at least rule that out soon.

Cheers,

Going by gddr5 flickering issues for AMD, I'd guess its memory switching speeds when it shouldn't, maybe.

Run gpu-z, click the option to monitor speeds in the background, play game, when it flickers alt-tab out and check if its switching between 2d/3d speeds or something.

well i ran gpu-z and fired up BC2. literally as soon as i got into a game it started flickering and the temp was only 65C or so. the max it hit was about 92C. i can't see this being a temperature problem.

i wonder if it's the heat blowing out of the back of the card onto the DVI cable... i've tidied it away but no joy there.

edit: temps are now back down to 67C and flickering is still happening.

it's like it's a refresh rate/frequency problem or something. my monitor only does 60hz

My card is only 40-45 degrees when i'm playing BC2, Nvidia's cards are toasty.

well it's looking more and more like it's my screen. new one arriving today at some point so will know for sure soon.

for now it's flicker mania here... can barely stand to look at the screen :(

If it still does it with the new monitor, and never did it with old graphics card connected to the monitor, it is very likely the new graphics card. RMA time. You could try it in another machine to verify.

Your friend is talking rubbish about the flickering.

Checked your cables leading into your monitor and your pc?

I haven't seen any flickering on my 480gtx. Its one thing that I really like about the card as I used to get it with some games on my 4870X2.

I hope you get it sorted.

You could try downclocking it?
I knew a guy who had to do this with his gtx285 for it to be stable.

Sorry but i have to say this, i thought nvidia cards have no problems :D

92C! It makes me feel so uncomfortable every time I read that people actually have components that run that hot in their PC's. Especially at stock speeds. Regardless of whether it's right for that card, it just feels wrong. My OC i7 can hit 70C in intensive use and that's not something that I'm best pleased about. If Intel released a version that ran cooler, I'd replace it in a shot.

I hope you get the problem sorted. Probably be better if it was the screen, it's got to be tricky getting a 480 replaced.

Programs such as RivaTuner work, they usually have an option for on-screen display that shows in the corner whilst playing games. If not, you can get programs like HWMonitor that can record your temps whilst playing and then you can get the results after you've played.

gpu-z records temps to a log file. that's how i monitored mine.

i've only got one dual-link DVI cable here and that's the one in use right now. not much else i can do really except order a new cable and see if that helps. although i wish this replacement 3008 would just arrive so i can rule it out! :P

i might try downclocking it if it's obviously the card but tbh what's the point in paying around £440 for a card that you have to unjuice to get stable? :( funny thing is I've had this card a week or so and it's only just started giving me grief since last night, the same day I installed a new SSD.

maybe there's some heat issues inside my case...

too many variables!

My 6800GT used to run at 80c - 90c under load.
So did my 8800GT
My 470 runs at a max of 79 during a few hours of BC2 so its the coolest card i've had in a while.
I suppose my 6800 & 8800 were overclocked to their limit though :D

My 4Ghz i7 runs at 67c max!

well my replacement 3008wfp didnt bloody arrive yesterday as it should have, so i#ll have to wait until early next week to test that. new dual link DVI cable arriving early next as well.

flickering still happening... :(
