Nvidia 480 Flickering

i've only just swapped out my 5850 for this 480, so it's almost definitely the 480... or my monitor has just started developing problems.

i've just sold my 5850 and i bet doing an RMA on this zotac 480 will be a pain.... stock levels are ridiculous... :(

i wonder if installing my new SSD might have something to do with this....

my old HDD + 480 + 3008WFP = fine
new SSD + 480 + 3008WFP = flickering...

is it possible my 850W Corsair isn't enjoying the new combo?

btw i've tested with 197.41 and 197.55, no difference.

My friends 470gtx does this, his problem was a dodgy cheapy monitor of ebay. He had to run at a lower resolution and refresh rate.

Everyone complains about the cards being so hot its the problem...the heatsink/fan and layour combination was made to survive this..i can actually touch his card on full whack at 80C and not feel anything well depends where i touch it of course.. It manages heat well....

cool well fingers crossed it's the cable or monitor, as both are being replaced next week. i really dread to think how long it'd take to get a replacement 480 under warranty! :(

i'll try removing and reseating the card although i didn't touch it when installing the SSD so doubt that's the issue. worth ruling it out though i guess.

cheers all

Yeah, double check everything you can think of bud, you never know. You don't really want to have to RMA that 480!

You could just not clock your cpu to 3.8ghz. ;) :D

I thought someone might mention that. :D

I suppose my 6800 & 8800 were overclocked to their limit though :D

That's exactly my point. While I'm happy to accept some higher temps from overclocking, and only to a limit, I wouldn't be happy with stock temps that high.

ooh new dual link dvi cable just arrived, a few days early! just plugged it in and will test it out now. if an hour or so into BC2 and there's no flickering then I think we can safely say it was a dodgy cable at fault.

will post back with results.

cheers for all your help fellas

now this is interesting.............

the cable makes no difference, flickering still happening. but it's only happening when the 480's fan suddenly ramps down. for instance i've just gone from being in-game in BC2 where fan was way up high, now i'm back in win and the fan has just suddenly dropped in speed and the flickering has started.

what's that about?

the amount of flicker also seems to tally with activity, so if i maximise a window it might stop for a second then start again. if i don't type it's slow flickering, once i start typing the flickering is super fast.

edit:

changing resolutions or colour depth makes no difference. i can't see any way to actually stop the flickering once it's started other than to turn the PC off (not just reboot) for some time and let it rest, then boot up again....

gonna open up my case and reseat some things...

i've removed and reseated the 480 and used fresh PCI-Express PSU cables.

the only thing I can think of is that the heat from the 480 is slowly cooking and interfering with my XFI sound card. would that do it?

the card is bloody hot... to the touch. and it's still flickering even just in windows without even loading a game or anything gfx intensive.

signs still point to a dodgy monitor as that's the only thing I can't rule out until new replacement arrives next week.

i got a 480 the only way i could do it is if i watercooled it, i read a bencmark review and apparently it heated the room up they were sat in within 30 minuest to +70oc and it could not suck enough fresh cool air in to cool itself back down and kept crashing and was very unstable.

i'm so close to putting mine togetherr testing it and flogging it to buy a 5970 and watercool it instead

btw do overclockers have a classified section to sell stuff proven to be bought off them ?

i suppose it could but ide be surprised tbh, i mean ive got my PSU, then sound card, then GFX card, then TV card all crammed into the bottom of the case & the amount of heat being generated is alarming, but i'm suffering from no graphical glitches. you could try sticking a fan in there to clear the heat & see if that helps.

cheers vog - that's basically what my rig looks like too. in fact i've just ordered a sata3 controller which will go in between the two... doubt it somehow!

there already is a fan in there i don't think temps are the issue because it will do it at idle when temps are absolutely fine, around 54c, like right now in fact. it's just started flickering and it's only 54C.

:/

it has to be some thing else causing the issue then, unless you've been incredibly unlucky & bought a lemon, which ide be really surprised by.

Just done some googling and seems there a few people out there with same problem mate. So i bet it got nothing to do with your rig . Looks like you just have to sit it out and wait for new drivers. It was same in some games with my 2x 5770 ATI cards . I use to have to reboot after battlefield bc2 to stop the flickering . Then new driver came out and bam all the flickering and black lines stopped .
