NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

Those of you old enough, remember back to when sprites were replaced by polygons, or when transform and lighting became and thing, Tessellation. all of these and probably many more have given a large hit to performance, but the hardware will improve and it will become the norm. it will just take a bit of time.

As for if the console can only do minecraft a 1080p 30fps, and you don't want it, maybe you won't get a choice, it will be a console release after all.
 
if i remember right the voodo 5 5500 cards which were out at the time didn't support it only the GeForce cards did (GeForce 2 i think it was )

According to Wikipedia it was the Geforce 256 in 1999 and
By the end of 2001, all discrete graphics chips would have hardware T&L.

Just showing how fast these things catch on if they are good. So in two years all new cards could have Raytracing hardware. That sounds about right. :)
 
I don't think I can agree with that. Maybe I could be convinced that DLSS is in so few games that it doesn't count but not Ray Tracing.

Ray Tracing is now part of DX12. AMD RDNA 2 cards will have it, Consoles will have it. It's going to take off in a big way. How the next gen cards perform in Ray Traced games compared to this generation will be important.

Cyberpunk 2077 will have Ray Tracing.

Cyberpunk will be an important game in 2020 but its just one game. What if you spend most of your time in say CS:GO, No Mans Sky or Skyrim its then naff all use there. I’m not opposed to ray tracing I just don’t see it being more than an enhancement for several years to come therefore its comes pretty low on the must haves no doubt Nvidia will try to convince you otherwise with daft statements like 10x the performance on Turing :rolleyes:

Someone who spends all their time playing csgo or Skyrim probably doesn't even know RTX cards exist and are now likely to still be on a 3570k and gtx760

You can’t make that sweeping statement I mean its not like you can spend ages in Metro Exodus even if you loved it with all the bells and whistles having to drop down from 4k
 
Most of the installed userbase of graphics cards cannot run RT well,or are even GTX1080TI level. The same goes with consoles. So for a few years,RT will still be a tacked on graphical option which can be switched off. Some of you are acting like suddenly no RT on a GPU means its destined for the bin - if that is the case,if you have a working GTX1080TI which is being thrown away,I don't mind having it! :p
Especially true since the devs have to target XOne as well as new consoles, for the immediate future after next gen launches. (MS certainly said this, not sure about Sony.) Strikes me as an odd thing to do, but there it is.

Its about numbers - look at how many more people have legacy consoles and non-RTX capable graphics cards. There are probably at least 150 million XBox One and PS4 consoles sold. On Steam a huge percentage of gamers are on sub £300 graphics cards,which even in today's sub £300 card stack almost the entirety of cards sold can't do RT,and the RTX2060 only recently dipped below £300,and that is not that great at it going forward.

If you suddenly made all new games require RT hardware,devs would loose a lot of sales,as most people are not going to suddenly ditch perfectly good systems,to buy a new console or spend £300+ on a new graphics card,and especially if jobs become a problem.

Also remember so many gamers are not in rich countries like ours,a £300 card can feel like it is a £600 equivalent in a country with half the wages of the UK,etc.

This is partly why the original Crysis was not the success it was,as most people were not prepared to spend the money to get it to run OK.

If this dual release on XSX and XOne for 1-2 years happens, it will be a first AFAIK.

I know why it is possible (with two subsequent console gens on the same x86 arch for the first time ever), but I'm not sure the argument that it must happen stacks up, when it's never happened before.

For the most part many big games were released with the older generations too. Games such as Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag,BF4,Call of Duty: Ghosts,Watch Dogs,etc being examples. Now with consoles all being X86 and being iterative designs,its far more likely we will have versions on older consoles - CB2077 is going to be on the current generation of consoles too and has RT included. Crysis:Remastered which has RT is also on the current generation of consoles too. Those are probably the two most graphically intensive games we will get this year. Even Atomic Heart,which appears to use quite a bit of RT which Nvidia used it as a demo in some of its talks,can run with it off.

If companies are so obsessed with monetising every part of a game,why would they want to leave out 10s of millions of gamers using older systems?? Look at how many remastered games we have,to get every penny out of exisiting franchises! :p

Also when it comes to PC,RT will still be another graphics option like Ultra textures,most games won't need RT as a prerequisite to run for the near future. We are on an enthusiast forum,the definite of "what is needed" to run a game is a far cry from "what is actually needed" to run it for most people. Everything on max settings is not a necessity but a want.
