Nvidia today announced the new NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS graphics processing unit (GPU).

The latest addition to the Company?s GeForce 7 Series line up, the GeForce 7300 GS boasts the video and gaming features of today?s most advanced GPUs to deliver high-definition video?up to 1080i resolution at mainstream price points without compromising performance. In addition, the GeForce 7300 GS GPU is primed for the upcoming Microsoft Vista operating system (OS).

The GeForce 7300 GS GPU features NVIDIA's PureVideo technology and promises twice the graphics horsepower of the Company's previous-generation mainstream GPUs. The cards also support DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 3.0 and HDR rendering for advanced lighting effects.

NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS-based graphics cards are available for purchase at approximately $99 USD from many of the world?s add-in card makers. The Asia Pacific region will see immediate availability of GeForce 7300 GS-based add-in cards in time for Chinese New Year. Availability in Europe and North America will follow in early February.

Ouch, seriously crippled, for the $99 I would rather get a 2nd hand 6800
 
This isnt a gaming GPU, its specifically specced for media centres. It kinda replaces the 6200.

Ah okay, but it is still $99 and does the 7x00 series actually have any advantages over the 6x00 cards regarding video?
 
No, not really, its just rebranding, like all budget cards get... Im guessing it might do HD better, as the 6200 isnt good at 1080i, but chance are it aint much different. I think the 7x00 series has slightly better deinterlacing modes than the 6x00 series, but to most of us, its just technobabble.
 
According to this Nvidia page the 7x00 has a number of improvements for video over the 6200, though I agree they are mainly for HD output.

In my case I have an AGP/Skt478 HTPC so am struggling to see what is the best Nvidia card to upgrade to for best quality video. The 6200 lacks future HD features but the 6600 and above (and any 7x00AGP cards that "might" materialise) are generally all a little more expensive and have in most cases noisy, non-passive cooling. I guess I need to read up a bit more on what features really are needed.
 
The best card would probably be the passive 6600 that Asus produce. But my 6200 is doing the job currently, but once i get a decent telly and start watching some HD stuff, it might be a little slow.

Yes, I guess so (or the Gigabyte one) and I can always underclock it as these do get hot and my HTPC case is running on the limit heatwise already to keep it quiet.

These are not $99 as were selling one on the website for £40ish excluding VAT, which makes them more like $75-$80 so though they aint a gaming card they are still good value for money and offer around ATI 9600 performance I'd imagine and that of a basic 6600 or 6600 LE performance....
 
doubt it, the 64bit memory interface is just crippling the performance too much. would need ram hitting 2ghz to make up for the lack of bus width.
 
These get around 4400 in 3dmark 03 and 2200 in 3dmark 05, if that helps to compare them to other cards at all. Its slightly faster than the 6500 and on par with a X1300LE.
