Nvidia attacks PS4 hardware, calls it "low-end"

Took the words out of my mouth. :p

Well said. ;)

I would be reticent to guarantee anyone that we are 5 years away from consumer acceptable pricing on 4K TV's... they are already available for around £6-7K... the first 3D TV's were around £3000+ and that was just 3 years ago... today an equivalent 3D TV is under £1K easily and closer to £600, that's a 5 times reduction in 3 years, more like 6 if you account for inflation as well

go even further back to the introduction of the first HD TV's and you see a similar pattern, from the first "consumer" devices at several thousand pounds to wide scale acceptance and "normal" pricing typically takes less than 5 years

but then, if you look at current consoles, they don't cope at full 1080p anyway, so it is hardly surprising that they are on the verge of being obsolete before they are even released

Why are people bashing nvidia for saying this?

The 8 core 1.4ghz processor sounds more like something out of a mobile phone and it's paired with an underclocked 7850.

Sounds low end to me

Because AMD are in it. This is a very AMD orientated forum and any chance they get to jump on Nvidia, they do :)

I pointed out that we are in for 4K TV's soon and that got rubbished. I will be getting one but I don't count I guess. :(

Hasn't NVidia been getting on peoples **** recently? Remember reading some topics in the Graphics card section of this forums about how unprofessional they are when it comes to work partnerships.

LOL Ive just read the thread and my its funny how things dont change :p

Anyway I see nVidia are still using kids in their PR and Marketing department - of course they dont care theyve lost out on two massive contracts :p - considering how many units the PS3 and X360 shifted (its a fair ballpark figure to equate to possible 720/next Xbox sales) having a major component inside them just means money rolling in. Loving the comments about Titan, considering how much money nVidia will actually make from that compared to AMD and their PS4/next Xbo contracts...

nVidia butthurt - nothing new there then...

ps3ud0

The PS4 is meant to have a 8 core Jaguar SOC running at 2GHZ. Looking at the leaked CB scores from SweClockers,a Jaguar quad core is in the same ballpark as a SB Core i3 running at the same clockspeed(no Turbo in both cases IIRC). So you are probably looking at around SB Core i5 or Core i7 level performance at 2GHZ without any Turbo, when all threads are in use.

Considering that the OS is going to be different and lighter and there will better optimisations for the hardware, due to the fixed specifications,I don't really think we can look at a similarly specified PC and make an estimation of performance.

Nvidia knows this well after working on many consoles themselves.

The Jaguar cores have a very low TDP and power consumption so it is probably why they were used. On top of this they are quite small.

Moreover, the whole chip is giant SOC,with the CPU and GPU on one die, with the GDDR5 stacked(Intel is doing something similar with Haswell GT3e but with GDDR3 and a wider memory bus) next to it on a MCM.

So,even going by the packaging that should cut down on the size and complexity of the PCB,and it also means a much simpler cooler for the whole system. Even the XBox360 now has the CPU and GPU on the same die.

GCN also supports X86 addressing with unified address space for CPU and GPU.

I suspect, there might be optimisations to enable lower latency between the various parts of the SOC too.

Looking at the comments from devs and programmers, they do seem a bit excited about the PS4,including the chap behind FXAA.

Hopefully, this will mean multiplatform titles with get a kick up the backside now!! :)

At least on that very note,we should be thankful we are getting some new consoles out now,and not in another 5 years.

BTW,Timothy Lotts, the chap behind FXAA(Nvidia employee) had some very positive comments about the PS4 specifications:

http://gimmegimmegames.com/2013/01/...tm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=zergnet_42581

However, for some reason, now he has taken down his original post and all of his blog.

Thanks for that link, it was exactly what my meager rumblings earlier on in the thread was about, but lotts tells it like it should:

“If PS4 has a real-time OS, with a libGCM style low level access to the GPU, then the PS4 1st party games will be years ahead of the PC simply because it opens up what is possible on the GPU. Note this won’t happen right away on launch, but once developers tool up for the platform, this will be the case.

As a PC guy who knows hardware to the metal, I spend most of my days in frustration knowing damn well what I could do with the hardware, but what I cannot do because Microsoft and IHVs wont provide low-level GPU access in PC APIs. One simple example, drawcalls on PC have easily 10x to 100x the overhead of a console with a libGCM style API.”

Being a PC gamer, I can never grasp why 99% of PC gamers ignore the fact that consoles don't need colossal gpu's in them in the first place.

But that's what Nvidia are counting on with their petulant childish outburst-PC gamers ignorance of the tech-which is plain to see with the comments on the PS4 spec.

As if ANY GPU company would not give their high teeth to get the console deals like AMD got. Yes, the margins are low for each GPU sold for consoles, but that's because there will be so flipping many of them!

It's a fantastic situation for AMD to be in, and will give them some very steady and very long-term revenue, not to mention great industry support.

This is sour grapes from Nvidia and an ungraceful way to act, they are an arrogant company and I'm not surprised they are so unpopular to work with.

That's not remotely true. Most PC gamers are well aware that a 7850 in a console is far more capable than it is in a PC. Very few would argue otherwise.

More likely they're just throwing their toys out the pram because they failed to secure a single console this time around (unless you count the Ouya).

If bare metal coding is so great why do all console games take place in corridors or have invisible walls (New Vegas).

They don't, not much more than PC games anyway. The only issue is that they're running 6-7 year old hardware now.
