Nvidia bans overclocking for its G80

Wow, so this is going to be a limited supply launch and they're putting a block on factory OCs? This isn't like Nvidia at all, hard launches and factory OCs were what made them stand out in front of ATI who often paper launch and also (mostly) banned factory OCs.

I guess though, as has been said, you would have to take drastic measures like this at first when looking back on the 7900GT fiasco etc. this year. Who wants to place bets that ATI will suddenly start allowing factory OCs? :p

Yup Gibbos already said they are very limited in supply, and he may only get around that many, so expect to pay a premium of £500+. :)
Yeah exactly, I read somewhere only a few thousand worldwide for the first batch. So the price gouging will begin for a card with nothing to stress it for months. Daft. Might as well wait a few months and buy one for 2/3rds the price.

i read on evga forums that some asked if this will be a limited launch , evga said not atall this willl be a huge launch the first dx10 card on the planet although supply for the first few weeks will be poor

That's called a limited launch. :p

Paper launch: When they announce it but absolutely nobody can get it.
Limited launch: When they announce it but only a few people can get one.
Hard Launch: When they announce it and they are pouring out of everyone's ears.

:D

being returned on mass borked, somethings not right here'. :D

lmao, that a technical term? 'mass-borked', loving that one bud.

Seems strange NV deciding to stop the clock, maybe they want to ease the chip in, without another 'mass-borked' fiasco. *

Yes as it is a brand new design they don't want just anybody ocing it :)
They have allowed factory OCs since well before the Geforce 6 series, right from launch, so that's not why they're doing it. We don't really know why they are, but the most sound explaination so far is that they don't want to risk another 7900GT fiasco until the G80 architecture has proven itself.

Mark my words, and feel free to quote me in a couple of months time; ATI will only take advantage of this and start offering factory OCed cards as soon as they are able to if Nvidia take this route.
