Nvidia cards... dropping like flies?

So which card exactly is the replacement for the 7900GTX???? I will be very annoyed if 7900GT owners are getting the same replacement card as 7900GTX owners!!!

Not quite true the GTX has 1.1ns ram even a GT clocked to GTX speeds is not a true GTX due to the fact it has 1.4ns ram

Yeh As i said the mem and core are clocked differently, 1.1/1.4ns refeers to the rams speed, or more accuratly what speed its capable of, the actual core is the same thing, the core is 7900 clocked slower, they dont make loads of different ones for different things, they make 1, 1 only and depending on its capable speed and how many pipes are functioning 'speed bin' it to various cards they sell

There is no replacement for the GTX

7900 GT owners will be given a 7950GT if they need to RMA their GT's if there is no stock of 7900GT's left.

That and provide the GTX core more voltage. :)
I wasn't getting out you combat BTW :p

7900GTX core voltage is only 1.4 vcore I believe.....7900GT KO edition is 1.5v while normal 7900GTs are 1.2.

Therefore 7900GT ko's are able to clock highest without voltmodding.

Loadsa money, I agree with most of what you are saying mate.

I have had countless Nvidia cards, and they all overclocked badly, or died after a while, started artifacting etc. They lost it after the GeForce 4 series really.

The X800 killed them for a while, and the X1900 is cheaper and just as good as the 7900GTX. The 7950 has no end of of problems.

ATI cards overclock higher on more common and cheaper cooling, live longer, and offer a higher image quality, with HDR and AA support, all for less money.

Thats not exactly true now is it?

Since the 6800/X800 7800/X1800 7900/x1900 cards, everything has been quite close in terms of performance. Both manufacturers have had their low points too, with the X1800 cards taking ages to show its face, the X800 cards also having yield problems and being quite expensive for the top range cards at first.

The 6800GT cards overclocked like no enders, people putting 100+ mhz on the core half the time.

I've owned X850, 6800GT and X1800 cards now and all have been great cards. Im probably 49% nvidia, 51% ATi and thats only due to ATi Tray Tools although nvidia has a version (3rd party apps by the way, so out of the control of either ATi or nVidia) but isn't as good.

You can't say ATi have trampled nvidia since the Geforce4 unless you have been living under a rock for the past 3+ years.

ALL of the first (or maybe every 7900card) was based on the same bad design. The ones that are working are either cool enough or the components are good enough to last its working lifetime or fail much much sooner.

As for ATi. The last round of X1x00 series has been very good apart from a few cases of bad manufacture which led to resistors coming off.

Has there been a OMG my X1900 is dead? Must have been atleast one?

But yes, the last round of nvidias offering has a much much higher return rate

7900GT is a good card if you get a good one :p and as for 9800 Pros, I must have a got a good one, 500mhz core the first time I got it :D

WOW I loved my 9800 PRO.

It was the first "serious" GFX card imo.

Looking back, the 9800 pro defines AGP.

Best GFX card I have ever owned,in terms of the power from the previous gen.And it's still holding its own :p

I'm on my 3rd 6800GT in a year now.

1st one just suddenly turned off, never came back on (this was the 6800GT with the really small heatsink made by leadtek)

My second 6800GT came with a bigger heatsink, but soon ended breaking by making my screen go purple when playing games.

And my third, is working fine.

The whole dying g71 situation makes me feel worried about getting a 7900 series chip in an upcoming notebook, but unfortnuately ati has no rival products in this space as the mobility x1600 is underperforming, and the mobility x1800 can't be had anywhere, Mobility x1900 wasn't even launched.

With only a one year warranty, is there really that great a chance of the 7900 dying that i should go for something else instead? Or wait for the next round of chips (8800go?)

Wow, i have to dispute that.
You would have to say it was the Radeon 9700pro.
First AGP 8x, first DX9 hardware.
Blitzed it closes oposition at the time, the Ti4600.

Hi there....

Just got my 7900GTX back from an RMA return. Just tested it with my other card (same) in SLi and got a 3dMark06 score of 8662 at stock speeds.

I am disappointed......

Spec .... AM2 3800x2 @ 2.5GHz.

I was expecting something around 11,000???? Is this unrealistic for 2x7900GTX @ stock with 3800x2 @ 2.5GHz?????

Without the 2nd card I got scores around 6000ish! So I was expecting not quite double somewhere upto that mark!!

Any tips .......

Jules

PS ... No overclocking tips yet ... I just want to establish my system is doing what is "the norm" at stock settings.

Just to say that I have "fingers crossed"! at the moment 2 yes thats 2 7900GTX's in SLi. The RMA at least seems to pass 3d Mark06 without any noticable corruption.
