ATI cards use more power and run Hotter.
In fact the fastest card in production ,the GX2 uses less power and emits less heat than the X1950.
a GX2 is 2x 7900gtx in sli mode on '1 card'

as for a single gfx processor, i.e. and individual card, the x1900XTX and x1950xtx are fastest on planet, if you run it like for like, i.e. crossfired versions of these cards, they obliterate a GX2. Powerconsumption is a smidge more, but not a lot more than a GX2, and can get toasty yes, but lets face it, if your buying and running these cards I very much doubt (unless your somewhat dense) that the rest of your system is going to be aweful, so how much power they use/hot they get is a moot point (who cares if it runs at 65c vs 55c as long as it works fine, it doesnt effect image quality and to a point fps !{unless your o/c course then heat is the main enemy}).
Picture quality swings slightly in favor of ATI, it just looks more crisp and clear, and the ability to run aa + hdr is a nice touch, as far as how 'intelligently designed' the GPU is (as far as processing images), ATI's is better, and should be, it was on the drawing board for longer.
As for drivers Nvidia wins here, iv used 6800 and 7800 card, both good and there driver interface 'seemed' a lot more 'fluid' and well written, but then there relativly a more 'simple' beast as far as internal techincals go. ATI has caught up though, there latest drivers working nicely on my X1900XT card.
SO its all swings and roundabouts, the
CURRENT leader in everything (bang for buck, drivers, picture quality, power, fps) is just had by ATI, there GPU's pulling ahead with suprior capabilitys and video playback as well. No doubt nvidia will bounce back with something great of there own, if that wins the next 'round' ill buy that 1
