Nvidia cards... dropping like flies?

Hows that, the topic is about the 7900 problems, i said they have problems, i wasnt talking about you easy above, i was talking about the others who turned it into a my knobs bigger than yours thread, there is no point as both manufacturers make quality cards, both are as good as each other, ATi do some things better than Nvidia, Nvidia do some things better than ATi, ATi run some games faster, Nvidia win some games faster.

Ok,

Thats alright then. ;) :p

Just to throw in my 2 cents... One of my 2 ASUS 7900GTX cards was DEAD (DOA). Enabling SLI seems to have found a dead card!!!! Definitely a knackered card as I have run each seperately with 3dMark06 with 1 card running fine passing with 6000marks and the other crashing with corruption in Canyon Flight and Deep Freeze.

Currently I am awaiting a RMA or warranty repair (not oc). Do they generally repair or replace these cards???? It's only 3 months since I purchased them.

1 thing I must say is that ASUS are out of order for their SLOW ... VERY SLOW support forums and responses from technical support (sent them an email 3days ago and still awaiting a reply).

One other worry I have is that the second card differs in serial number by 2!!!! So obviously they are of the same batch so I am worried that the second card is fragile!!! I won't be overclocking these cards anyway until I can afford to replace them (ie when equiv. cards are available for 150quid say). At 300quid a card I am not taking any chances since I have already had 1 dud card.

just a thought.

A friend of mine orderd a aces 7900 gtx and the build quality was lovely but alas it went down so he ordered another and that went down also so i was well disapointed.
But even after all this im still drawn to the 7900 gto because of price and build, am i mad hehe not sure but i would love it if they sorted the prob.

by the way he ended up with 1900xtx.

just my thoughts cheers.

I think it's pretty hard to deny that the 7900 series cards have had serious problems. Yes, you always hear about when people's cards don't work rather then when they do, and yes, every card will have a certain number that fail, but there really has been a massively disproportionate number of faulty 7900s. I've had two faulty ones myself, and some other people have had it much worse than me as well. All you have to do is do a quick search for "Faulty 7900GTX" or "7900GTX problems" or something like that to find a hell of a lot of people with dodgy cards.

There's nowhere near the amount of reports of failed X1800s, X1900s, 7800s, etc, so it's pretty hard to say that there isn't a problem with the 7900 cards. It's not a matter of ATI vs Nvidia, it's just a simple fact that the 7900GTX and GT are far more likely to fail than other cards.

We should have a poll to show how many people with 7900GTs have had problems. I know i havn't.

Now thats a good idea :)

Question could be : Have you have a faulty 7900 series card, and list the options :

7900GS ( may as well include it )
7900GT
7900GTX
7900GTO
7950GT
7950GX2

You forgot to add the option

No i haven't, got a 7900 and it works fine.

Just for comparison purposes.

I wonder how many people here have 7900's and DON'T KNOW THEY HAVE a faulty one.

Yeah sure, I had one that worked for a day/benched ok.
Next day it started acting up, locking up on one certain 3dmark 06 test (Freezer one)

But sure it'd play BF2 fine..mostly, and quake 4 (at least).
Just a quick search came up with so many people with these problems (Which I knew about before I got the board).

They had problem in other games which I hadn't got. (But may do).

Then my friend got one down a month later, ordered same day, just het got a 6700 I got a 6800 so I had mine delivered sooner :P

His also was faulty.
Will his replacement will be faulty?, I guess I'll let you know.

But I could have been some average joe who didn't bench, get a 7900, play a few games and not see the underlying problem which could get worse.

I took that back the 3rd day for an RMA and got a refund, waiting for a next gen cards to come out. 7800GT Is doing fine for now ;P

Err...

Sounds to me like he is saying the chinese are n00bs at making hardware. :p

If he's got a problem with hardware made in China and Taiwan maybe he shouldn't buy their products. Guess he won't be visiting this site very much. Infact he won't be doing much online shopping at all.

So are Nvidia going to stop production of the 7900GT soon or will it co-exist with the 7900GS and 7950GT?

The 7950 GT is the 7900 GT's replacement, so now that they are no longer in production its as i said, they are not working to fix the problem anymore, so the last stocks out there will be same as, if you have to get a replacement then hopefully the place you got it from can't source anymore otherwise you will get yet another one until stocks dry up, if they can't then you get a new 7950 GT etc..., im amazed ppl are still saying theres nothing wrong with them, yeah we made this fully working card that has absolutely no problems at all, but we were bored one day so decided to change the memory just for the hell of it, then we were going to do soemthing with the voltage regulators as well, but we decided not to as were no longer producing it now :p, and isn't it funny how its been repalced, that speaks volumes, wheres the GTX's replacement from the new 7950 range hmmm. :p

They knew they had problems, they didn't know what it was, tried the memory, didnt work, so ended its production and replaced it with the 7950 GT, simple as that, sounds about right to me, so in essence they have fixed the problem as they've replaced it.

No It isn't,

GTX's run at 600 core and 1.6ghz on the ram

The GX2 runs 500 core and 1.2ghz on the ram

I meant its the same core tech, its the same bloomin thing just clocked at different speeds, same as a x1900XT and x1900XTX are EXACTLY the same core, just ones clocked higher than the other

Not quite true the GTX has 1.1ns ram even a GT clocked to GTX speeds is not a true GTX due to the fact it has 1.4ns ram
