NVIDIA Could Be Developing Super Secret Hardware Planned For Gamers – It’s Not a GPU

Maybe nvidia is doing their own api like amd have just done with mantel?

I wouldnt mind that one bit. 1 API for optimized AMD performance, 1 for optimized nVidia performance and DX11/OpenGL for those games that dont have the budget or simply dont need all that extra performance.

Cant see why it would be a problem, there are loads of more cash flowing around the gaming industry today than back with glide and we have fewer APIs to choose from that are worthwhile. Big engines like frostbite, CryEngine and UnrealEngine could easily have support for 2 vendor specific APIs and 1 or 2 generic ones like DX or OpenGL..

The community, content and convenience of Steam are en route to a living room near you. And best of all, it’s free.

Valve is one of the most innovative forces in the gaming industry, and that sentiment is amplified by Monday’s announcement of SteamOS. As a long-time PC gamer, no conversation about the pillars of the game industry would be complete without mention of Valve Software.

From their award-winning and innovative games to the leading PC game distribution and community platform Steam, Valve is synonymous with PC gaming, and the ability to innovate.

Now Valve is at it again! The concept of SteamOS from Valve really hits home with me because there are three things I’m very fond of: big screens, PC games and customer choice. SteamOS is an elegant way to get your PC games into your living room and onto your biggest screen.

SteamOS is built around the already familiar Steam and is a version of Linux. But it’s enhanced for gaming — and for gaming on the big screen in particular. Combined with the fact they’re giving it away to users, and hardware providers, for free, SteamOS has the potential to usher in a new era for gaming in the living room.

This means that anyone can build hardware and software for use in the living room, on an operating system designed to be lightweight, extensible and optimized for gaming. Suffice to say, we here at NVIDIA are very excited!

Engineers from Valve and NVIDIA have spent a lot of time collaborating on a common goal for SteamOS: to deliver an open-platform gaming experience with superior performance and uncompromising visuals directly on the big screen.

NVIDIA engineers embedded at Valve collaborated on improving driver performance for OpenGL; optimizing performance on NVIDIA GPUs; and helping to port Valve’s award-winning content library to SteamOS; and tuning SteamOS to lower latency, or lag, between the controller and onscreen action.

The collaboration makes sense as both companies strongly believe in the importance of open-platform innovation, and both companies are committed to providing gamers with a cutting-edge visual experience.

Valve will deliver a great, open-platform gaming experience, and NVIDIA will continue to be the best choice for gaming on any open platform or operating system, including SteamOS.

Not so much a surprise but it is nice to have it confirmed. I bolded the last bit because I can :D

Furry muff. :)

No problems from me as long as its not proprietary. Get on with Left 4 Dead 3 please asap!

EDIT

More here. http://hexus.net/tech/news/graphics/60621-nvidia-reveals-one-valves-steamos-partners/

I'll pick this quote out for you Gregston.:p

It would be interesting to know if AMD had some engineers 'embedded' at Valve working on the same kinds of optimisations to make Steam Machines based upon its APUs and GPUs attractive options.

I have never played them but I feel all I will be playing is BF4 as of next week and 'nothing else matters' (Tune). :)

G14 left me slightly disappointed last night but reading bits and bobs today, it paints a better picture. AMD need a new PR team, that is for sure, as they showed that slide of performance in 3D Firestrike and if we are all honest, it didn't look note worthy and then the guy talking about the audio, I had lost complete interest (and the fact I watched YNWA get beat by the mancs) at the same time seriously sent me to sleep.

With the steambox and with mantle, things are looking good for gamers of either brand and we will soon have both brands in a PC :D

The only worry for me would be the only games i think of when i think of valve is Half Life 2 and the Left 4 Dead series. Both were great in their day but are dated now.

What is this going to mean for gamers? Is the steamOS going to run games better than windows 8? Or are we only talking OpenGL games, cos there aren't many of those.

Possibly this isn't the big announcement. I just read this and thought it as a possibility.

And fair play Matt :p

I bet it is Greg, its a pretty big announcement i think. Though i have no idea where its going. I mean its free after all, you rarely get anything good for free. :D

Same for me Matt. I very recently played back through all the HL games including blue shift and loved them but they have been very quiet since. Maybe with the backing of Nv, they will start to push out more games and we may see HL3 but as far as playing HL3 with a controller in front of the TV....No tar, regardless of how good the hardware is.

Greg apparently AMD pledged full out of the box support for the new SteamOS from day 1. It was that Indian guy speaking on stage. Incase the name didn't give it away. :D

Oh man, I have been away far too long and slipping up. Far too much to read today and brain can't take it all in :(

Edit:

My understanding is steamOS is available for PC and is a complete OS like Linux. Steambox is an exclusive to either Nvidia or AMD or is this again available to either either?
