Nvidia doesn't want to just dominate the graphics card market, it wants to own it

Just as long as they log into Nvidia's servers, and watch Guru get a cease and desist or just not make the driver available outside GFE.

Nvidia, and AMD have a system to make it easy for console noobs to setup their PC right now, its everyone's choice whether or not one uses it.
this is Nvidia forcing you to use it so you can't ignore the bloat and addware they plan on cramming into it.

This is the sort of crap Apple do.

You wait, they'll start putting ads in GFE before you know it. Of course being Nvidia it'll be another "feature". :p

Of course, thats the only reason they would lock drivers into it, it force us to use it.

There is nothing new about it, its just GFE 'compulsory mode' Bloat-where and adds coming to a desktop infront of you. Curtsy of Nvidia and there is ______ all you can do about it, well.... there is.

Load of rubbish. Wonder how much Nvidia paid for this article, usual pcworld drivel.

As usual the Nvidia bods in here praise it and take it for the gospel.

This :)

If nvidia "own the market" and AMD is dead, then have fun with the 5-10% performance increase each year, if that..... even higher prices, driver support lacking etc.

Best way to put it, is that if/when this ever happens.... it will be the end of PC gaming as we know it, you might as well buy a PS/xbox

I just want a graphics card to run my game, not some "AMD" or "Nvidia" experience which seems more like they are trying to make the gaming PC more like a console,to attract more console players, just like Valve are trying to do. In the end we are only going to end up with the PC being an upgradeable console. Sigh.

I bet they'll start wanting subscription fees at some point too. Just like console.

I'm not a fan of the new AMD Crimson changes at all, however at least it doesn't force me to use Raptr (thank ****!)
Nvidia putting drivers behind their pointless bit of bloatware, GFE, is pretty much a deal breaker for me. I don't want to have to log-in to yet another thing, I've quite enough things I need to log into already, let alone my GPU drivers. I'm also comfortable enough configuring my own games. Having GFE for people too stupid or lazy to learn how to change graphics setting in-game is fine, but don't try to force it on everyone.

In fairness if you're only getting 5-10% increases then there won't be any point upgrading all the time so you won't need to buy new GPUs at higher prices. So a GPU will last you longer and be better value for money. It'll be a bit like how people don't buy every generation of Intel GPU for a similar level of performance increase.
And do you really need much performance increase when all you're getting are lazy console ports for the next 10 years anyway?

It's illegal in Windows dude. Why do you think Microsoft made the original Xbox?

I'm sure they'll find a way around it, They've probably got a room full of lawyers somewhere just thinking excuses up and another room full of lawyers thinking more excuses up for if those don't work.

No no no, I see the Nvidia bods saying otherwise. Quit with reading things how you want to and actually read things.

Really good article. It's exciting times being an Nvidia owner. Personally I dont like there being no competition but its been that way for a long time now and I've seen no downside. So, onwards and upwards as they say :)

Lambchop seems to be very pleased about being locked into GFE. :p

Wasn't targeted at you personally Greg.

You've actually pointed out why the first thing won't really happen - PC isn't the only gaming platform, people won't buy a new £550 GPU for a 5-10% improvement, just like people don't replace their £300 CPU for a 10% improvement now.

Even if AMD do go under, it isn't like PC gaming has no competition and Nvidia still need to generate revenue so they will have to do that by delivering a reason to upgrade.

The problem is most people are not stupid, we all know what PCWorld and Nvidia want you to take away from it but in reality most people see it for what it is, an advert, a way to manipulate people into thinking they are getting something they want when in reality its the last thing they want.

What does it have to do with you wither I like or don't like GFE? You are single handedly trying to ruin a thread like you have tried with the nvidia turnover thread. I like to be positive with most things, are you get on people's back about it? Oh dear.

The thing is that they are getting something they want, Ease of use. Unfortunately we are the minority, It's not the other way around.

Was just pointing out to greg that what he said wasn't entirely correct. You seem to have a penchant for being rather hostile to those who disagree with you. Anyone who does is "derailing the thread".

Yes, as we do right now, its the locking you into it thats different.

The only reason they would do that is to make it more attractive to Data Minors and Mass Marketing, the only reason Nvidia would lock you into it is so that they have a higher mass of data to sell and the largest possible audience for third parties to advertise to, which they pay Nvidia to bombard you with adverts through the lock in GFE.

I got no problem with GFE or Crimson as some of the stuff is of use and is used by lots of people. It's just the "Forcing" of people to use it. I can see Nvidia blocking all the other outlets of drivers once it's all up and running and going at full steam (No pun intended).

The one thing I will say is that Nvidia do seem to be turning into Apple in more ways than one.

I dont like Apple products because they do not let me have a choice over many things on their devices...hence I run android, which does. It does indeed look like Nvidia are creating an eco system and locking people into it. For them it is a shrewd move, especially with the percentage user base at the moment. For consumers as a whole and for the gaming industry it could well prove it's undoing. However, we will have to wait and see.

Some will ride along the Nvidia wave while others choose not to. Interesting if uncertain times ahead.

hmmm, it's starting to sound like bloatware :(

Nox
Didn't really think of it this way but... Yeah :( they're really prioritising proprietary software / hardware and game hampering software (when using anything but nvidia) which is not really a good way to go. The article itself isn't really saying anything new but just recognising the bad trend in creating anti-competitive advantages. I don't mind when companies offer things like g-synch as it's an improvement and AMD can do there own version on any game too but when you start scratching away at the first party titles and hampering them with gameworks then I draw the line.

I don't think nvidia are going to become more friendly though as people just give them money anyway but I'd like to see the hardware competition not be sidelined by software that is invading and hampering others playing the game. Shadowplay for example doesn't hamper and users so fair play and its a software adding to game use but hopefully nvidia slows down on the other bits that hamper other users. I don't fancy nvidia being the closed eco system Apple of the grapphics card market but then damaging others in the process as well is a bit of a pain .

Don't think I've been hostile at all. I've been very positive in the thread. I think however, the pro nvidia news doesn't sit right with you. That's something you need to deal with rather than concentrating on correcting people.
