Nvidia GameWorks HBAO+ Behind Visual Corruption In Gears Of War Ultimate Edition

Stop the press AMD apparently comes out trumps in one effect out of all the GW's effects in titles released to date shocker.:D

There's also no difference in PhysX in this game for AMD either; but then again it must also be NV. Must also be Gameworks fault for AMD doing so abysmally in The Division as well.

Surely it can't be the devs at all.

The only game where the actual effect was causing issues is Gears of War( the same one running perfectly fine in many games, especially anything else out this year with it, or last year, or the year before it), and last year when Hairworks was terrible in the Witcher 3. The only one where I can see fault with NV is hairworks for the over the top tessellation, but what else is directly their fault in the last year and not the developers for implementing it badly or just not caring enough about the game on PC in general?

A new angle on the story.

We've been here before with Project CARS, turns out it was just AMD's PR machine getting the fanboys worked up as the PhysX used runs on the CPU.

GPU PhysX wont run on AMD hardware unless AMD support CUDA which they don't. So either there is CPU physX running, the source code of which is available for free here https://developer.nvidia.com/physx-source-github, or Nvidia cards get GPU PhysX and AMD cards are doing something else the developer created. Either way, PhysX not responsible in the slightest.

It really just looks like AMD driver issues because the different GCN architectures all perform so differently.

Just noticed 2X980Ti, meanwhile back in the real world where 99% of users can't rip through titles with the sheer brute force approach, do have problems.

Literally 100's if not 1000's of Nvidia users flood complaints at their hardware vendor with nearly every GW's initial shoddy titles, while the naive ones that don't know any better think it's time for an upgrade...

CA-CHING!!!

Few patches ir a dev override later it's fixed.... :p

Or you could just got on a rant about nVidia and PhysX/GameWorks without understanding anything about the technology and look incredibly stupid to anyone clued up.

It's just as well that hardly anyone on here is clued up then, eh? LOL

Most of the stuff spouted on here is just speculation anyway. No-one knows what will be what, until it happens in a 3 - 6 months time.

:p

New drivers out from AMD, supposedly a 60% boost in GOW for the Furys

but the 980s still smashing em :p

This is why Maxwell/Gameworks has been a masterstroke by NVIDIA.

I don't like the methods used to establish this performance dominance, but I can no longer consider purchasing a new AMD GPU. Bear in mind I've purchased AMD cards only since the 9800pro, many many years ago.

I recently bought a laptop to use while travelling. It has a 980M, Skylake i7 CPU, 75Hz Gsync panel. It runs games far better than my 390X/6700k desktop does, despite the 390X having much more performance on paper, despite the 390x being fed by a 4.8Ghz desktop CPU and being a desktop grade GPU compared to the mobile grade 980M.

I'll be jumping on the Pascal bandwagon once it releases, doubt we'll have more than 1-2 more GPU generations from AMD before they go under, or are bought out.

Sad times indeed.

I was gona jump on the Pascal bandwagon too with AMD breaking their drivers, but now with Nvidia breaking theirs, i got myself a PS4.

A few isolated cases of problems with the most recent NVIDIA drivers is not even a ripple in a pond. We'd need to be seeing thousands of users reporting the same issue for it to have any merit. We haven't....

Remember how many millions of NVIDIA cards are out there, 75-80% of the userbase are using NVIDIA cards after all.

If it's as you say, then all that will happen is your decision to buy Nvidia because they are willing to cheat means that when AMD is gone, Nvidia will just tank the performance on their GTX 2070 drivers so you have to buy a GTX 2072 card for £400 to get the same performance you used to have.

SUpporting a company that cheats because ONE game sucks badly is a joke and is why Nvidia get away with what they do. Fiji is beating a 980ti reference in all reviews I've seen in The Division at 4k and in a several reviews at all resolutions and all settings. But because Gears is a joke, which you shouldn't buy anyway purely because it's on Windows Store and quite aside from the fact that it's a lazy way to con more money out of people and that it's AMD crippled, you wouldn't buy AMD cards any more when currently AMD are providing significantly better price/performance in the majority of games?

You'll support Nvidia for holding performance and the industry back as a reward for holding performance and the industry back?

Consumers have always had all the power, don't buy from WIndows store till they fix it and MS would be forced to fix it, buy from the store anyway and MS have no reason to fix it. Don't buy from Nvidia if they are going to cheat everyone and then Nvidia wouldn't have the power to cheat everyone. Unfortunately consumers have all the power and zero self control, never do what is best in the long term and screw themselves out of their own money.

Most people don't update their drivers the second they come out, a huge number of people reported the problem. More importantly NVIDIA confirmed the problem, pulled the driver and had to release a fixed driver.

It's funny because every time someone says their is a problem guys like you insist it's isolated and no one even has a problem even when Nvidia confirm it's a problem. Like the "there was never any performance problems with Kepler... you made it up.." Nvidia guys on the forums. Nvidia literally released a statement saying something was up with Kepler performance then officially released a driver to fix Kepler performance..... but it never happened according to a bunch of Nvidia people on here.

This isn't the first or the last terrible driver set from Nvidia, more often than not now their rushed game ready driver creates way more problems than it solves. Nvidia are just lucky that it appears(maybe too early to say) that it took one driver to fix the problem this time around, usually it takes a half dozen.

Is that the mobile 980 or the recent actual desktop 980 in laptop form?

I see you post this a lot but never see you post anything about AMD driver problems. I see both have problems from time to time but don't feel the need to pipe up every time there is a problem with AMD. Having run both AMD and NVidia and having no real issues with either, I don't see why much of a fuss is made really, after all if you have a problem, just roll back to the last driver that was good. No need for your repeated anti NVidia posts really.

980m, mobile version.

Seriously well put together bit of kit (Asus ROG G752), IPS panel is beautiful, extremely impressed with the frame rates and general performance.

Gsync runs as well as Freesync on my 390X and BenQ XL2730Z combo.

The performance in many of the new releases which feature gameworks is much better than on my AMD 390X setup. Everything is just much smoother.

All companies "cheat" - it's how they make money. Just look at what Intel got away with over the years.

Whilst I'd like to continue my loyal AMD support, I'm not willing to sacrifice my gaming experience by choosing the underdog anymore. Unless Polaris can somehow beat NVIDIA in gameworks games, I'll be all over Pascal.

If DM was to post stuff about AMD drivers he may want to mention where 4 way CF is disabled in situations where the Fury X runs out of memory.:D

There are problems with drivers from both vendors from time to time but they do get resolved.

Everything is just much smoother.

This is the main difference I found when going from AMD to Nvidia. There clearly is less latency, though to be fair I did find my 7970 also a smooth experience, just not as polished in that regard as the last few Nvidia cards I've had (GTX 480 / 570 & now, the 980 Ti).

Well like yourself I actually run both, albeit in single cards for me and really have no issues with either. I wasn't happy with SLI and G-Sync personally and found it to microstutter but I blame G-Sync for that, as previous to going G-Sync, I never noticed it but as soon as I got G-Sync, it kind of stood out for me. Not all games I have to say but quite a few and I hated it.

I feel both have good and bad drivers but when running SLI or CF, you mostly need the newer drivers for profiles but for single card users, it is less of a problem and older drivers do a decent enough job for the most. DM is just so hung up on bashing NVidia, he would be better off trying NVidia and seeing for himself on what is what. I surprised myself with AMD :D

Have you played XCOM 2 yet ?

It is great on a single TX and should be even better on a G-Sync monitor.
