You forget that they are not only combating the 980ti, but the entire AMD 300 series that will be launching very soon. (Gibbo already has stock, unless he was trolling us because they are all rebrands)

He'll be getting stock of the rebranded 390 & 390X I reckon, not quite the daddy Fiji yet...

So I just read this...(Ars technica article)

DirectX 12's ability to finally pool graphics memory across multiple cards in SLI and Crossfire will also have a tangible effect on 4K and its need for lots of VRAM
Was I the only person that didn't know this?

..because I think that's HUGE!

Combined with the extra performance, my two 970's effectively become cards with 8GB VRAM (oh..OK 7GB for you pedants out there :D), or 12GB for two 980 TI's, I'd have thought much more was being made of this DX12 feature.

It has been mentioned but like most useful information, it gets lost in the troll swamp.

You didn't think the forum was for useful discussion did you?

I imagine it will take quite a while to effective, but if it can be done easily by all involved then it's certainly an outstanding benefit

That's all well and good but by the time DX12 is in the majority of games I feel 970's will lack the grunt not the VRAM.

Next 7 years of gaming will be centred around what the XBONE/PS4 can provide.

970, especially with the potential boost DX12 will bring, will be just fine for many, many years to come. ..Unless you are one of the 0.000001% of the market who feel they must have 4k in order to simply enjoy a game. :D

People said that for the previous consoles and it wasn't the case.

If you're wanting max settings or to play at resolutions greater than 1080p then the 970 certainly won't be fine for many years to come.

4k will be standard for PC gaming in a few years time, monitors are already pretty affordable and we're now seeing cards capable of doing 4k reasonably well so when this filters down to the mid range with the next generation it will take off.

Doubt it, 4k is still a long way off for the average person.

I think the 970s have a few years left in them, graphics won't shoot to far ahead untill the next consoles are coming up. I could be wrong of course, but let's face it, over the past few years we have not seen any massive leaps forward.

Went over to a mates the other night and quite surprised how well a few games ran on a 460 cyclone!

Everything is pointing towards 4k though, AMD and nVidia both making a big deal of it now when advertising their top cards, streaming services now offering it, TV's in stores are all about 4k now.

People thought the same thing with 1080p when we were all gaming and watching stuff at 1024x768.

There's another big shift due soon and I think we'll see it before the next consoles.

Just look at the Steam surveys (and many others) to see what the "standard" is for most folks. Mainstream at 4k? Think at least 10 years from now. And, of course, you've now added yourself a get-out clause to your previous statement by inserting a generic, meaningless phrase of "in a few years"

Gaming development is dominated by XBONE/PS4. They are grossly underpowered compared to a typical 970 - and that's before you add DX12 to the mix... A 970 will give good performance and great visuals for most folks for years to come.

Sure, if you want ultra/ultra/ultra + 4k the card isn't for you. But that isn't most folks, hence your original assertion was wrong: the 970 won't be "running out of grunt" any time soon. :)

It's not wrong though is it as depending on what your needs are it already runs out of grunt in certain games today...

It's not a get out clause, no different to your "many, many years" statement.

I wasn't talking about 4k being standard now so the steam hardware survey is pretty irrelevant, I know 1080p is the standard at the moment, but times change, people move on, always wanting better. Once 4k is affordable at the mid range level it will gain a lot more popularity.

I do agree with this, i expect to see gamers going from 1080p to 4k and skipping 1440p. you can watch movies etc in 4k now where as there simply wasnt lots of 1440p content other then games.

According to Steam survey, over 58% of people still game below 1080p and less than 4% game above 1080p for single monitors.
