Nvidia GPU PhysX almost here

“If i remember, i think ATI's Havok was going to be done with Crossfire, so if the game used the Havok Physics, then it would use your 2nd card as the sole Physics one,”
ATI where only going to support Havok FX not normal Havok. When Intel bought Havok they dropped all support for FX. All games supporting FX dropped it and so did ATI. In a semi recent interview ATI said they scrapped all plans for physics for years to come if I recall correctly.

ATI are pretty stuck right now if physics take off they will be left in the cold. Both there CPUs and GPU’s don’t have physics support while NIVIDA and Intel do.

EDIT
“Does the Ageia Physx card out now need SLI to work?”
No, instead of using the Ageia Physx card you use the GPU to do Physx.

I knew I had read some stuff about this when tri pci-e boards came out:

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=2009&page=3

It clearly states the third pci-e 8x slot can't be used for SLI and Nvidia are keeping stum about what you would use the third slot for.

So potentially there is hope you could have a 8400 card doing the physics along with your 9900GTX (or SLI 9900GTX) :D

However this quote from Nvidia would suggest otherwise:

Yesterday during a conference call NVIDIA's CEO Jen-Hsun Huang announced his company has shipped more than 2 million GeForce 8800 GT graphics cards in just four months of production.

NVIDIA also shared some details about their acquisition of AGEIA, their plan is to port the physics engine onto CUDA so every CUDA-enabled GPU (like the GeForce 8 series) will be able to run physics after a software download. Huang said NVIDIA has already shipped 50 million CUDA-enabled processors and that a few hundred million more will be shipped over the next several years. He claims the ability to port the physics engine on top of CUDA and accelerate physics will provide gamers with a ton more value and will encourage people to buy even better GPUs and SLI or tri SLI configs.

Surprised no one mentioned the need to possibly having to change PSU to accomodate a second card. That will definitely sway some people away.

I also think HybridPower with IGP motherboard will be interesting, if the newer on-board GPUs can sustain the requirements for the physics calculations.

P.S. Is anyone else annoyed by Pottsey's inability to use the Quote button?

The problem here is that untill both nvidia and ATi come up with a single card solution for physics (i.e. dedicated physics processing built into the graphics card), then game developers will always keep such advanced physics at a "gimmick" level rather than a integral part of the gameplay.

Reason is, most people don't have SLI/Crossfire and they sure as hell aren't gonna get an extra graphics card just for the physics. I mean, it's hard enough keeping up with the change in technology in games anyway (e.g. dx8, dx9, dx10, etc), adding another variable to mix will just infuriate pc gamers even more.

So, unless game developers want to cut off their games to the majority of gamers (those who do not have two or more cards) or allow two versions of their games to be played (with/without physics), they will have to keep physics as a merely superficial feature.

Yup, id say its a certainty, they aint just gona want you doing physics with an old 8 series card that you bought of an auction site for about a fiver, or without having to buy another card at all, as surely if your gfx card is doing physics as well, then its gona be taking a hit. :)

Well NV can stick there 9series were the sun dont shine am gonna be doing physx on my 8800GT :p

As long as it doesn't become mainstream, i.e. by forcing you to buy two of their brand-spanking-new(or at current, 2 year old refreshes) graphics cards realistic physics processing will never take off.

There's just no money to be made in the mid-high/top-end range.

What is the problem with forum users on here? Recently there have been some very intolerant ones.

For 4 ish years there was no problem with me posting like this then in the past 2 ish years all of a sudden a few people don’t like it. Yet all the other forums I visit and post like this don’t have a problem. Why is my posting style a problem now but not a problem in the past? Why is it this forum only?

The trouble is though, they know they can force it, as it will sell. :(

look at the 9800 GTX, its just an 8800 GTS 512mb thats been upped in price, yet they still released it, yes, as they know its going to sell, and SLi for that matter, has to be the same exact cards, so if you buy one at £350, then you have to buy another one at £350, and it can't even do dual screens, yet that rubbish is selling in droves as well.

I don't have a problem with Pottsey's posting style, his style has never changed since he joined, im used to it.

for 4ish years? You have been registered since 2006, thats around 2 years.

I joined in 2000 or there about and lost my account in the big wipe at least I think it was during the wipe. Anyway around 2004/2005 there wasn’t any PowerVR news or cards on the market so I stopped posting. It wasn’t till I came back to the forums in 2006 I found my account had been wiped so I signed back up.

A few members still remember me from the old times and have confirmed I am the same person.

The problem is, it's a lot harder to read than the regular Quote feature (like I'm doing now :)), and also doesn't display who the author of the original post is.

This is the only forum I've seen out of literally dozens from around the web over the years where someone hasn't at least tried to quote normally like everyone else :p

So to sum up this thread we have all decided and agreed as follows:

1. Running an older 8 series card for physics next to your new 9900 GTX is possible but Nvidia won't do it.

2. If your 8 series card is powerful enough then you will get physics for free (if they charge for the download people will post it for free so unlikely) but at a cost of framerate yet to be decided.

3. Nvidia thinks it will encourage more people to buy their faster cards or go SLI for the physics (depends on the games and support) as the new games with physics bring their cards to their knees

4. Unlikely that we will get the killer games we want since ATI don't have physics supports so if integral to a game, the game designers are limiting the sale of that game to Nvidia owners only.

Is that about it in a nutshell?

pottsey's been around longer than that:) he's mentioned this a few times before:)

it isnt harder to read at all lol. infact if he's replying to several different statements in one post, it makes it a lot easier to read. if peopel are annoyed over something as insignificant as his posting style, then you should straight up get out more and stop worrying.

Pretty much :)

I still think it'll fail.

Charging for the drivers will just alienate consumers from PhysX even more, and with SLi requirements I doubt will help matters further.

The only positive thing from this is finally some worthwhile use of CUDA. Where nVidia want to take it to next is a different matter.

Not now they can't, as those cards are no more, only way ATi are gona get Physics, is if Nvidia lets em use one of their cards to do it, and what are the chances ? :p

Oh well, as long as we get NV cards we're fine, too bad for ATi owners they'll have to be left out in the rain :p Or they can come in if they join the green team :p
