Never fails to amaze me how companies can bury their head in the sand like that. I remember when the 6800 was coming out nvidia had some press thing saying that the highest peformance gpu at the time was the 58xx series, had me rolling my eyes.
To sum up: Price is horrendous. Performance is a whisker over the competition. Cards are power hungry and very hot, and as a result, probably loud. No general availability until April, and even that may be in question.
This is bad for the gfx card market, poor competition may slow things down somewhat, and keep prices high, at least for now. I firmly believe that the way these cards are made has reached a peak. They really need a total rethink, but don't ask me how, I'm not the guy whos job that is, and it's pretty irrelevant to this thread.
Here's hoping the GF104 pushes the limits of this architecture in a similar way to the G80/G92. I think we'll see a fair improvement in performance with this and the drivers, which nvidia seem good at optimising.
As it stands, the sensible money is on ATI. I'm not biased, my last two cards have been nvidia, and my current GTX280 I still find more than adequate. I may even miss out this gen of cards completely depending on the demands of new games. I guess when DX11 is a necessity, then I'll jump ship.

100% agree. With new gaming consoles offering 720P quality on your TV for the same price as a flagship PC graphics card, it's not looking good. It almost makes me think twice about building a gaming PC at all.
omg i want 1 but i dunno what 1 to order ? :S. whats the lik average 1 ?. i still need to buy the rest of thep c for itto and probaly getting a overclocked i7 bundle of some kind

Go and do the sensible thing and buy 2 5850s or a 5870.

The 480 is technically the fastest single GPU.
Doesn't mean anyone who buys one isn't clearly insane.
Doesn't really matter, the fact it's faster in "some" games means they can legitimately call it the fastest, marketing is never exactly logical.
Yeah technically it is one of the fastest GPUs, however it is only faster in some games and the 5870 is faster than the 480 in some games in all of the bench marks so far, but the 5870 is not the fastest GPU either.
Instead I would say "One of the fastest GPU's in the world".
Even if the prices were decent why would any one want to buy the 480 (excluding nvidia fan boys and people with more money than sense
) considering the amount of power it draws and more importantly the temperatures lol. Besides its only 10-20% faster in some games but yet costs about £150 pounds more or something like that than the 5870.

they don't offer 720p they offer upscaling of some stupid resolution (you'll have to google to confirm that i'm afraid but i read it somewhere recently
)besides most people have a pc already so why not spend the money you would on an xbox on a graphics card so you can play with decent settings?
Although on the other hand the stream of console ports is killing the advantage but we'll see where the future takes us
(p.s fermi is a tad dissapointing glad i went with the 5970
)
