Am I right in saying however that the reference cards tend to run a bit hotter? Does that not mean more heat is emanating from the card therefore creating more heat in the case? Or is the blower design specifically designed to take all that heat out? Sorry if this is a stupid question.
They are designed to operate at 80c, so the card won't turn up fan RPM until 80c is reached.
Yes the NVIDIA cooler dumps all the hot air outside the case so in a small enclosure a 970 or 980 reference cooled card will run cooler as case ambient temperatures are lower.
