I know there not really to be compared but I was going to possibly pick up a 680 locally for just under £400 but am trying to convince myself its worth £100 more than say a 7950

Just cant decide what to do, im stuck with a gt430 atm lol but dont know whether I should go get something asap or should I wait and hope 670's come out soon.....

I would have thought a 7950 would suffice for most set-ups, unless you are expecting ultra settings in every situation, and for all games. Personally, I'd take the 7950.

if its being used with a single monitor at Hi res up to 1080p with high in game settings, I'd have thought a 7950 would suffice and would provide good performance in future game releases as well. The 680 I reckon is good for multi monitor displays and/ or very high res displays.

Edit, Just noticed this what arc@css said :)

What do you play, and what sort of settings do you expect to have configured? Resolution?

As Rusty0611 says, buy the best you can afford. This is sensible advice.

You can do that all day ;)

Lol i know.....

Mostly FPS and the odd racing game such as LFS but that can be played using the on chip gpu, BF3, Alan wake etc etc

1920x1080 on a single screen

I had a 580 which was perfect but I found it a little noisy in my matx case tbh so I passed that on to a mate, so something that can perform to similar levels to that and from what i can tell a 7850 overclocked is about the same? But the question is how loud will that be, i cant do loud

I should think a 7850 with a good overclock will beat a 580, though not by much. If noise is something you are especially considering, I would advise you to buy a card (whatever the model) with a non reference cooler.

The thing is by buying the best you can afford now, it's less likely to bomb out sooner on newly released games. By bomb out I mean hit its performance limit.

7850 is a great cheaper option.

I've got the money for the 680, my problem is I tend not to keep for that long and I guess my biggest concern is loosing more money on that than I would on a cheaper card... (I know there is nothing that can be done about that)

the 7850 twin frozr iii looks a good card for about half the cost of the 680.... and here I go again

If so then he's better of with the 7950. Losing 50% on a £300 card is better than losing 50% on a £400 card.

Not really. It's pretty basic maths but using percentages means that you're in a similar position buying into the next generation in the same tier of cards across the board.

Your argument doesn't make sense because the higher card costs more in the first place meaning you've got a better card to begin with.

Yes he's got a better card to begin with, but is he really going to notice it on his single 1080p screen? I would argue not. I think he would notice the 100 quid in his back pocket more.
