NVIDIA Maxwell architecture is coming sooner than expected (can’t share any details yet).

In a Videocardz post regarding upcoming HD 9970 12-layer PCB, they hint at Nvidia Maxwell launching much sooner than expected. I know this article is about the HD 9000 series, but let's be honest Maxwell is far more interesting :p. Hopefully this means we will see Maxwell on 20nm sooner rather than later :)

Change 'xx' to 'tt'

1-2 months, not long to wait!

This sound quite a lot more interesting than previous card launches too, let's see what both AMD and Nvidia have up their sleeve and how it works out for the consumer.

May 2014 for maxwell I say! They're still reaping in profits from 7xx - they'd be silly to release maxwell so soon.

Depends how demanding next-gen titles are really, if benchies start coming out showing min fps in BF4/Watchdogs sub-60 on a 780, Im sure the next gen of graphics cards will be shoved out the door

Oh joy, Maxwell rumours. Now do I use the 770 I just bought or send it back unopened and wait....

Depends on the 9*** series. If that starts to dominate the market they'll shove Maxwell into the world.

In turn dropping the 7** series to the price it should have been..

[/bitterness]

Aren't these GFX roadmaps planned 3-4 years in advance? I don't imagine people like AMD/nVidia are sitting on chips just because the competition is not good enough. If they had Maxwell ready they would be pushing it out the door ASAP to absolutely obliterate AMD.

If they do bring it forward it'll be by a couple of months at most and the result would be a very soft launch probably, with cards being as rare as hens' teeth!

9xxx = 7xx contender = 28nm.

They'll battle it out, 20nm Maxwell will demolish 9xxx. They have no need to bring it out early as the 9970 will be around 780-titan performance.

Why? Sales are good enough already. It's not good business to replace products that are selling fine.

The longer you can hold your next gen back, the more money you reap on your previous R&D costs. Not to mention the fab process for current gen will be much more mature, and give better yeilds than a brand new GPU.

Until I hear different, I'm expecting Maxwell in Q1 2014. I really can't see them castrating the 7xx's cards by releasing Maxwell too early. Still, the wild speculation is always fun to read.

If Maxwell is due in Q1 then AMD's 20nm cards will also be just around the corner.

Tbh im waiting for end of 2014 till i upgrade, the 7990 will handle anything untill then

You have to be careful though. With the HD9000 soon to be released,by spreading rumours that Maxwell is being released early,it means people will hold off buying the competitions cards.

This has been done before.

I dont think Nvidia are anywhere close to haveing a maxwell ready, if they did then AMD would have its spys telling amd this info.

Then AMD would hold off and release its 20NM asap.

BUT I dont think any of them are ready to mass ship 20nm parts as im sure the fabs are busy?

Tbh who cares, amd already have gaming under the thumb and while working closely with consoles they get first hand and first dibs on any games developed for the console to work better on their Amd hardware. Its very good long term strategy and i can't imagine the endless possibilities this will bring for them.

Really considering moving over to amd for graphics for my next upgrade.

These next lot of GPU's are going to be ridiculous. my 780 is running games smoother than a cashmere codpiece @ 1440P. With Maxwell rumored to be coming sooner rather than later will probably skip AMD altogether now and go GTX 780 - GTX 880.

I'm not so sure it will work like that tbh. Consoles using PC architecture will not only benefit AMD but also Nvidia and Intel. Nvidia are stepping up their involvement with the big name games as well. Witcher 3 with Physx is a big sell for Nvidia imho.

Take a look at some of the upcoming Nvidia flavored games below,

You've said the same thing about playing @1440 for the last....5 cards? :D
You're the type of person where everything is smooth/maxed/best when using the hardware currently inside your case, so not exactly the most reliable source, i'm sure if you were to switch from 780s to 620s they would play @Max smoother than a smooth thing from smoothville...

As for being ahead of scheduled, sure but probably only a month ahead of their original road map, so these still wont be showing their faces till Q1 2014 earliest.
