NVIDIA Multi-Frame Sampled Anti-Aliasing (MFAA) Performance on GTX 970

Guru have this to say.

Today Nvidia will release its new driver that allows you to fool around with MFAA. Give it a try and let us know what you think about it in our forums. And sure there are downsides with MFAA, currently broad wide spread game support is lacking, only a dozen or so triple A titles will work with this new AA mode. As such it is also profile dependant and last but not least, I have to state it; it is very close but not as good as the actual MSAA equivalent. Would you ever notice the difference visually in-between MSAA and MFAA ? We doubt it and as such MFAA is the logical way to go

Seems like a step in the right direction compared to fxaa and txaa. Now all AMD/Nvidia need to do is get something as good as SSAA that does not destroy fps.

Tried a few more games and I was going to post noting that I am actually seeing minor (1-3fps) drops with MFAA enabled but that Guru3D link states:

Now remember, 2xMSAA with MFAA enabled = 4xMSAA output quality.

To get and compare to 4x MSAA equivalent quality, you need to set 2x MSAA + MFAA. At 4xMSAA+MFAA enabled you would get 8xMSAA quality and 8xMSAA+MFAA would get you a quality equivalent of 16xMSAA at a lesser performance cost.

Guess I would need to run BF4 (and others) at 2xMSAA to get a true comparison... :p

Yes and it seems a few of us did.

In the bottom 2 photo's it's quit easy to see msaa doing a better job. Look at the stairs with the iron guard rails. The guard rails are definitely more aliased with mfaa especially along the top. It's still pretty close tbh. The lighting seems to be different as well with the Msaa pics looking overall lighter.

Maybe some screens of msaax2 vs mfaa on and msaax2 to see if there is any difference in the same msaax2 setting with mfaa on and off.

Looks the same to me which is good, I run ALL of my games with DSR on and at least 2xMSAA+TrSSAA anyway so with MFAA I can run that now and get a bit more performance.

Nope thats light effects again looks better on MSAA.. The shooting on that part the game doesn't start till you walk more into the map.

ok maybe I see what you mean now.

Aye, just that bit above the mini map, can't tell for sure, it's impossible to compare on a phone with such low res screens.

This all sounds a bit like csaa? So it begs the question which combination of dsr/mfaa/csaa/msaa gives the best trade of between iq and fps? Tbh this is an area where nvidia should have their finger on the pulse with GeForce experience, get that to set up the best combination.

Will do mate give me an hour or so till I get home.

Is Far Cry 4 good enough or you guys want something else?

There is something you could do with FC4.

anyone else feel that god rays makes the game look ugly maybe volumetric looks better but i thought enhanced was meant to be better?

GOD RAYS OFF

GOD RAYS VOLUMETRIC

GOD RAYS ENHANCED

Edit : Could it be because enhanced is for nvidia only and looks like crap for me on my amd? not sure what settings are Nvidia only tbh.

Maybe someone willing to compare this scene on there nvidia card?

Dunno if this has been mentioned but according to the pc per podcast fraps etc won't capture this in images, and they had to use their fcat software to capture it. Its mentioned around the 37 minute mark.

ed: they cut the mfaa discussion into a seperate segment.
