Nvidia: Next-Generation Maxwell Architecture Will Break New Grounds.

I'm looking forward to Maxwell as it comes just when I'm planning to upgrade my old 580. So a 780 (?) will be just the ticket for me. Still, I'll be waiting for reviews, specs and price at the time.

lol at post raping. I'm guessing the thread quickly turned into a fan-boy war ?

Was talk of it.
But, by the time Maxwell appears, we then have apparently AMD Volcanic Islands series HD9000 appearing, replacing Sea Islands HD8000 series, but 2014 is still some way off & thing might change by then.

AMD - NV both use the same foundries, I think it was mid last year NV publicly complained that TSMC 20nm offered little to no benefits over 28nm while also being more expensive and having less yields.

AMD also said a similar thing, while not putting it that bluntly, they just said that they are no longer looking to aggressively adopt smaller manufacturing as there is no benefit in it now.

Who knows what that means for us, but AMD will have that 7000 (8000) refresh by the turn of next year or early next on current 28nm, with significantly improved performance per watt and Heterogeneous System Architecture, which is already going into todays mobile 8000 series GPU's.

They are perhaps going to let 20nm mature before adopting it right away, NV and AMD have in the past adopted new nodes before it was even tested.

Lately there's literally nothing between AMD/Nvidia anyway, whatever Maxwell brings, AMD will be there or there abouts, leaving pricing deciding on what to purchase-bar the diehards-either way.

But if it was that simple then any person buying would get AMD as they're generally cheaper. Alas it never works out that way nor is it ever that simple.

Basically, wait and see but there's more to buying than price and market shares would appear to confirm that.

To be honest I don't think there's any big deal about these so-called "breaking new grounds" anymore. Geforce 8000 series, Radeon 9800 etc...now those cards "broke grounds" in terms of performance, but I doubt we will EVER see cards like that again.

In a way the Titan did break new ground in terms of performance, but with that kind of pricing it made it pointless and nothing more than willy waving...

Market share in no way reflects high end(which 99% of discussion here is about) share as it's a small percentage of overall sales, which no one has the slightest inclination of what's what.

My original comments are simply based on observation of a massive shift towards AMD here@OcUK and general comments around the net, the shift has occurred mainly because of high Nvidia pricing.

I think NV market share is largely (tho not entirely) down to discrete mobile GPU's.

Where the there is a mobile GPU 9 time out of 10 its an NV, while AMD's discrete mobile market share is so small its not even worth putting a figure on it.

This is AMD's own fault, their mobile GPU's are about equal to NV yet AMD did absolutely nothing at all to get 3'rd parties to use them.

They are now pushing the HD 8000M, so we will see what happens in the not to distant future.

Well I was just on about as a whole, that AMD don't dominate the market which shows that price isn't everything people consider when purchasing. I don't see what's disagreeable with that but carry on.

Improved general purpose capability without sacrificing speed sounds nice, what sort of things might we be able to do in the future with this?

Debate is fine, but when it turns into a rude and unnecessarily blunt exchange, the entire thread suffers. I think a good number of people, in life generally, have a hard time recognising what an opinion actually is, and even worse, seem to have a lack of respect for other folk's right to one. I never see it as my duty to shape someone elses opinion to suit my own tastes or bias (or ego).

Hate to say this, but any post positive about Nvidia would seem to instantly become a mark target to be burnt or make sure to be ran to the ground by some people...

I am not sure what was said/deleted and frankly don't care. The thread was a bit of good news for the GPU industry on the whole and good to see the future is looking strong for us PC gamers. I am not sure if anyone else is feeling the same but with the imminent release of the new consoles, I can see a few PC's gathering dust whilst all the games sales that the PC has (which is very good of late) will be lost to consoles in the future.

Love or hate AMD/Nvidia, we need both to be competing. If AMD or Nvidia were to fold, that wouldn't bode well for us PC enthusiasts and if you think Titan is a ridiculous price, imagine what you would be paying with only one supplier....

Maxwell is very much alive and this is a good thing :)

It was just all pointless bickering because somebody dared to say something pro nVidia in a thread dedicated to Maxwell :D. I'd say I was shocked but that would be a lie.

So who do we think is gonna come out ontop next year? ATi or Nvidia? I'm considering selling my 680 and holding out for the best next year. Don't really game at the moment except on Defiance which isn't graphically intensive anyway!

No idea. For me personally, I don't care much. I'll be buying Nvidia even if AMD have an edge, which I doubt they will given what little we already know about Maxwell.
