right i know there is a lot of controversy about these two cards but im going to be upgrading my system very soon, (waiting for the new cpus to come out) and in the mean time i want to know which is better. im mainly playing CSS and some other games and i want new games also like crysis as i played it at my mates but my lil old sstem would not even give it a thought if i installed it. so do i get GTX 280 or a ATI 4870?

my price range is about £300 and i want something that i can just max out the settings no problem and have it last me a few years if possible lol

so what you think..........

ATI 4870 for sure.

Far better spec than the GTX 280 range and cheaper.

Just look at the OcUk buyer reviews!

at 300 you might be able to get the x2 4870 aswell once pirces come out and settle after initial gouging

4870, only £175, GTX 280 isn't worth the extra £85 as its only around 10% faster, and the 4870 actually beats it in some to. :)

All i can say is that at this point i recommend the 4870.
Look at the reviews, people are saying the same thing.
Look at the spec differences.

If you want Crysis to run good minimum frames, and betterframes altogether - then the GTX280 is the one whether a £258 one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-018-PV Point of veiw, with Core Clock: 602MHz
- Shader Clock: 1296MHz
- Memory Data Rate: 2214MHz

...OR,

A faster one at £305 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-075-BG The BFG, with: Core Clock: 665MHz
- Shader Clock: 1458MHz
- Memory Data Rate: 2400MHz

The ATI 4800's have had stuttering problams that i've heard on forums, not saying they all have this prob, not at all, and that a good driver couldn't fix it, but, still - it's what i've heard - and tends to be "off-putting" somewhat

Your call though. ;)

Well, he said his price range is £300, so why go for something less - if he can afford it? when the OP is prepared to spend £300 on the fastest card, which - at time of writing, is the GTX280 is....

This stuttering problem is a problem that is most likely on dud cards, as me and likely other people have had no stuttering problems. The 4870 all the way, hell even if you play crysis the 4870 is still good.

And regarding the price, if he has 300 quid, then its worth waiting a week or so for the 4870X2 which should be faster than a GTX280.
