nVidia or ATI

This stuttering problem is a problem that is most likely on dud cards, as me and likely other people have had no stuttering problems. The 4870 all the way, hell even if you play crysis the 4870 is still good.

I think he's talking about Crossfire and possibly the X2 4870.

lol thanx it worth knowing, but i jus realised i wont be changing my monitor as the screen is only 19inch which is still big but i cant fit ne thin bigger where it is lol its a decent samsung 930bf ne way so im sure i mite b able to get away with it easier cus the screen is smaller even tho i will b maxin out the resolution :P hahaha

Well, he said his price range is £300, so why go for something less - if he can afford it? when the OP is prepared to spend £300 on the fastest card, which - at time of writing, is the GTX280 is....

~Ant

It still depends on whether he's prepared to pay 50% more for a 10% increase in performance, and arguably worse AA and IQ.

I think a 4850 would be perfect for that resolution. Sell the 4850 if you ever change your desk and can fit a bigger screen in but a 4870 and GTX 260/280 would be wasted I feel :(.

Microstuttering?

Everything has that, well all crossfire/sli setups as far as I know. Just some less than others.

Yeah and that's what I think he was pointing out. That the GTX 280 as a single card won't have this in comparison to 4870s in Crossfire. My m8 has a DFI X48-TR2 motherboard with 4870s and he can be a right picky git at times, He's more than happy so I don't think it's as big of an issue as Antx777 is trying to make out tbh.

lol well i want the e8600 so i got more time to think about it until that bad boy is out, and if the ati 4870x2 is out by then ill look at other peoples reveiws and see what they think cus i cba with been the 1st 1 and been disapointed with my card lol

Read my last post. Anything over a 4850 will be truly wasted on a 19" screen.

Get an ATI 4870. Just do it.

If you can wait for the 4870X2, that would be a good option.

There has been quite a large number of failure rates for the GTX280, temps shooting up to 105C within minutes of playing a game and stuttering from the GPU throttling the clock speed due to overheating. If you happen to get a good one then technically it is the fastest single card solution available at this moment in time.

If i had to choose personally between the 4870 and GTX280 i would choose the former. ATI have always been solid, both the hardware itself and in the driver department.

If you don't want to worry about futureproofing, just get a GTX280 and be done with it.

Both ATi and nV have cards have their good and bad points, but you can't deny the GTX280 is singlehandedly the best performing card on the market.

You will have no problems running any game with AA/AF and everything on the highest settings with a 19" monitor.

Get a 24" monitor down the line and you're set.

Seriously, if you are not looking to buy it now, don't make the decision now.

Wait until you are ready to buy, because even a few weeks can make a big difference in this market.

lol well i was hoping the powercolor 1024mb version 4870 was out 2day as it says on here but its not :S and i mite jus mite be able to fit a 24" some time down the line have to get mesurements haha. well is there anypoint in waiting for the e8600 or **** i jus get the e8500 and be done with and get the upgrade now???

I think this setup will rock, so down the line i could go cossfire wiv 2 4870 cards and get a bigger screen! and all to fit in my retro cheiftech dragon case lol

dont make the mistake of thinking that more ram necessarily = better. more vram starts to make a difference at high resolutions. at your res, i believe there will be MINIMAL difference between 512 and 1024 vram. i play at 1680x1050 and am more than happy with 512...apart from crysis + AA, but i am also running a 2900 so prob nothing to do with ram ;)
