Nvidia PhysX FLEX

I get the feeling this thread was 50% info and 50% troll, cuz Greg, you know you can't post anything Pro-Nvidia without it being pounced on!

To be fair the same is probably true for any Pro-AMD threads posted, except they seem quicker to shout 'fanboy' at anyone not immediately onboard with it (based on no actual facts, just the impression I get, hence why I said 'seem' and not 'are').

Talk about blowing everything out of proportion.
No FB comments at anyone have been made and no one has pounced on Gregster.

The demo looks impressive but I think we are still a long way from seeing this type of thing implemented in games. Demos from 4 years ago still outclass any kind of physics we see in games which is a bit of a shame.

The thing with PhysX that gets me is, if it's so dead and buried why is it every time it gets mentioned, certain people get up in arms about how it's propitiatory. By all means express how irritating it is not to be able to get to try it on AMD hardware, but half the time it feels as though people hate it purely because they cannot use it.

I agree with a lot of the comments here and would like to see PhysX more in games. One thing people are failing to read or not understanding it, is Directcompute support as well as Cuda support.

This could very well be seen running on AMD GPU's as well As Nvidia in the future. :)

And that is the Key to getting those effects in games.

Still the water when hitting the ground looked off as it was beading together like oil but thats my only criticisms of that vid.

Fantastic, stuff, looking forward to see it in action.

Bottom line, whether you are against it because of the lockout on AMD, you are not a true PC enthusiast if you can't be honest enough to admit it is very impressive as AMD haven't displayed anything remotely like this sort of stuff at all.:)

Although not an IP that belongs to AMD like PhysX belongs to Nvidia, AMD are behind Bullet and the widely used Havok physics engine so to say that AMD haven't "displayed anything remotely like this sort of stuff" isn't quite true.

Interesting that Nvidia are planning on having this running on DirectCompute as well as CUDA, this could result in a wider adoption.

Yeah, developers want the game to appeal to everyone, not arbitrarily limit features depending on the GPU brand you have. Hence my question - I'm not aware of any games that use PhysX to any real extent unless nvidia's paid them to do so (we can say 'sponsored' if it sounds nicer).

My concern here is that although it works independently of PhysX, it may still require PhysX in reality to be useful. If not, then that's great and would be more like TressFX.

I purposefully left out commenting on the DirectCompute implementation from the OP to see if anybody read it before making daft comments. It seems a few didn't bother reading it and took it as another PhysX locked to Nvidia thread or I am not interested. :D

I was hoping someone would have read it though and pointed it out :(

It would be very interesting if this new FLEX is like the next step of PhysX but not tied to Nvidia.
For 2 reasons:
  1. Will it be used more if it's not tied to one vendor?
  2. Would all the people that moan about PhysX like it more if they could use it or still dislike it because it was Nvidia developed. I know there's the argument about it being more widely used making it more useful, but I think if the current PhysX was more widely used it'd just be complained about more.

Of course those are probably both points that could be used when talking about Mantle too.

I see what you did there ;)

And I can understand the anger in a way. If TressFX was an AMD exclusive, I would have been disappointed. Such a little thing but I loved how the hair worked and found it made the game that little bit special (sad I know). If more and more games came out with that sort of effect and it was locked to AMD, I would be moaning about it.

To those that keep saying PhysX is dead, I say it isn't and it will be getting better in time ;)

Pay attention Roy!!!

It's hated not because they can't use it, but because anyone with an ounce of sense can see how much of a benefit PhysX could have been to the games industry if it was open for everyone to use. So far we have seen "frill effects" in a handful of decent games and Batman - that's it's legacy for the gaming industry since it's inception years ago. Think what it could have been had nVidia not locked it down.

But the one thing about PhysX that really, really ***** me off no end is this - I have 780's in SLI right now. Moving to 290X's just for a change in December and I would love to keep one of my 780's for dedicated PhysX, but I can't because nVidia are *****.

I almost hate myself for saying this, but the same could be said for mantle. Only time will tell.

Obviously locked to AND not Nvidia;)

Yes :)

That would be wonderful :)

Oh definitely, but they bought and paid for it. They're entitled to recoup. It's not fair no, but Nvidia has always worked that way. It's second nature to them. In the late 90s there were dozens of companies making GPUs. Nvidia have come along way with some lucky transitions and acquisitions (Gigapixel, 3DFX). Would agree someone definitely needs to take them down a notch, which is exactly what AMD are doing with Mantle :). I would certainly agree that the green team has gotten a little too comfortable in the last few years.

Waste of time..... OpenCL is really going to come into it's own over the next couple of years thanks to the next generation consoles.

PhysX is dead..

Yeah right.......so that would be the same dead physx thats in both of the new consoles then? If it gets used or not, people have been saying this for years now

I'm not getting in on the PhysX is dead bandwagon, but we are talking about GPU accelerated unless you have info the states that GPU accelerated PhysX is on the new consoles and not the CPU based which has been on the consoles already.

I think it's still software based on the new consoles, although if that is definitely the case I'm not sure why Nvidia felt they had to pipe up to tell everyone. Almost like a "don't forget about us" with AMD taking all the limelight for both consoles.

Physx isn't "in" either console. The software implementation can be used, like any physics API. I think it was more a case of "me too" and placating the few developers paid for Physx titles thus far and in the near future tbh.

It's a shame for the gamer what's happening at the moment, Mantle is also going in the wrong direction too (imo) even though DX needs a kick up the rear. It's not going to benefit everyone, and therefore, likely no one, in the long run.
