Nvidia planned obsolescence VRAM thread

8gb VRAM was 2017. Its 2023.............

No (mid to high range) card should be shipping less than 16gb VRAM today. 12GB 6700xt was released what, 2 years ago now? Thats a mid(ish?) range card, that is 2 years old, and has 12gb......

But Nvidia always screwing people over on VRAM though, its nothing new.

Lol textures are the least important thing they changed. Also all the 4k/8k texture ‘mods’ by randoms for random pc games are the worst. Super sharp garbage that doesn’t look right most of the time. Skyrim was riddled with that crap on the nexus.

Also i find it funny how this **** game gets so much attention. It’s the 3rd remaster for the same linear boring game that was on the ps3. Who hasnt played it yet? On ps3, ps4 or ps5? It’s not like it’s some dark souls/diablo type game with replayability yet people pony up 60e for this recycled garbage cause ‘new paint’.

This is Unreal Engine 5.

The first image is with just a basic terrain hight map made in World Machine, its 2048 X 2048, its small, nothing else in it, just a naked hight map. That's about 5GB already.

The second image is the same hight map with some basic terrain materials and procedural foliage spawner's, nothing special, and nothing else, we are already up to 7GB.

8GB really is 2017 as @BUDFORCE pointed out, the only people who apparently didn't get that memo are Nvidia.

This is the nail on the head. IDK if you realised what I will say in the first line with the "Better textures are about the easiest way to make a game look better" but in this case? that is absolutely spot on. This game is years old. They have not changed the game mechanics AT ALL, all they have done is exactly what you describe.

And it is one of those games? where that is all it needs. Every one needs to play this, even if they never had a Playstation. Because its story and execution are about as good as it ever gets. The fact I rate this game in the same category as Half Life, Mario 64 and literally a couple of others? says it all. Game changing definitive games is a superlative I could use. And sure, some of it hasn't aged terribly well, but then neither has HL or Mario 64. That doesn't stop them from being genre defining legends of code.

As for the last line? again that sums it up perfectly. All of the time you create a reason for doubt people will doubt it. Until you can categorically prove it like the stutter in Crossfire? there will be 10 8gb GPU owners there to argue with the one. And they know that too.

Jen is nothing but a glorified salesman now. A genius one at that, but that is his role now. More now than ever. And salesmen are not the nicest people you will ever meet, especially American ones. Capitalism means cutting proverbial throats. Be it the competition? or yours? they don't care.

To say that this isn't all 100% deliberate is just mad. You can't leave a genius in doubt. Ever. He knows exactly what he is doing.
games are for gameplay. Playing videogames for story is ...bizarre.

And there is just simply way, way too much zombie/apocalypse fiction out there. I'll never read another.

Is this a ‘is 10gb enough’ thread in disguise? ;)

Of course it’s planned obsolescence. In a few cases Nvidia are generous with memory, like the 1080Ti, 3090…but most of the time they give you ‘just enough’.
1080ti / 3090 were 'generous' because they could afford to be and needed to have a USP for the high pricetag (admittedly the 1080ti looks decent value in the modern market).

Arguably 'just enough' VRAM is the most efficient scenario because there is little benefit from 'too much' VRAM. It's not like cores, shaders, clockspeed etc where having more improves performance across the board.
The challenge of course lies in where the line for 'just enough' sits and how that line changes over time. If you want to run a GPU for years then 'just enough' likely changes into 'not enough' and then finally 'crippling' within its lifespan. The is more relevant with high end cards that would otherwise be competitive after a couple of years were it not for VRAM shortage. On lower end parts, say the 3060 12GB, it's less of an issue because the cards start to lack the raw grunt to get stuff done in future titles anyway.

See for me the game stutters/judders despite fps staying high even when using controller.
When using mouse it’s constant judder though.
The weird thing is that frametime graph doesn’t show it anywhere near as much as what my eyes can see.
Yeah that is strange you are getting stuttering, I am playing on a ps5 controller and it feel extremely smooth for me but when switching to kb&m it feels rough as **** but they are apparently looking into that so hopefully gets fixed soon , general gameplay is smooth as silk for me and personally think I'm pretty sensitive to frame spikes/ stutters so would pick up on it if it was happening but it isn't at all for me.

I was watching bang4buck play it on his 4090 yesterday at 4k ( and was arguing with someone in the comments about vram  ) and it was smooth as for him as well although it did crash twice and this was after the patch so it does still have stability issues it seems on certain setup. Hopefully they continue with the daily patches and this should be fixed in about a week

No it's not. It is all part of the game. Just like how when you go to the movies you don't rate the film on how well it was acted (though that makes a big difference) you base it on the story and how it is told.

Yes, there have been many zombie games now. Too many to count. However this one is the best one (single player 3rd person) by a mile. The characters and story are some of the most important things in modern games.
