Right, time for me to ask the questions...

Just added a pair of new 7200.10s to the PC as a RAID0 array and the performance isn't what it should be:

raid_optimal.JPG
  • NForce drivers v6.86 (latest) are installed
  • Mobo BIOS is at latest level
  • All drivers installed in windows
  • Drives have had SATA1 jumpers removed and are running SATA2 mode according to the drivers.
  • Both drives give normal HDTach traces when run in single drive mode

Drive1
Drive2

For the life of me I can't see anything wrong or anything else I can change. Anyone got any ideas?

Hmm i was getting crap performance on my raptor when i first installed windows but it was due to windows, by default, enabling NCQ. Which my 8mb cache raptor doesnt support, disabling that sorted it out.

Ive no idea if your drives support it, thought id mention.

They should support it and it is turned on so I'll turn it off and give it another whirl.

EDIT: No joy I'm afraid, still getting the same results.

go to device manager, go to the disk controllers (think its primary/secondary) can't remember now not on my main pc

find the NCQ etc options and caching, and untick them all for all your sata controllers, then reboot pc and try again, should be a lot better

Just disable cached reads, as I was helpfully advised in this thread (post 18 onwards):

That only sped up my burst speed, I don't know why you're curve is flat, whilst my RAID0 7200.10s has the normal looking curve.

OK, I've tried disabling all the caching and the NCQ and things are looking a bit better:

The average read is OK, I was hoping for 125Mb/s or so but what I have is consistent across most of the array which is something.

i think you'll have to remove the jumpers at the back of your Seagate drive to enable it for SATAII.

but i'm not too sure if it'll help in HDTach
