Nvidia re-release Shield Tablet K1

I know what you mean about the controller - I keep going back and forth on whether I'd actually use it to be honest!

I've come to the conclusion that I'd probably use it the most while streaming video's etc to a TV via a HDMI cable using "Console Mode" - I tried this without the controller and basically you have zero control as the Shield's own display turns off! (the "Mirror Mode" works OK but is a tiny bit laggy and you don't get the correct aspect ratio etc!)

Gaming-wise I'm just not sure I'll get much use out of it!

I've noticed a buzzing/white noise with the headphones plugged in whenever there is any sound playing, I have the sound set quite low when in bed and it's quite noticable as it stops a few seconds after the sound stops.

I've also noticed a buzzing noise coming from the bottom/right side of the device when it was on charge last night (in bed again), whilst i was trying to find a movie to watch on Kodi as i didn't havemy headphones on at this point.

Has anyone else experienced any of this?

I'm thinking I will purchase the controller, i'm just holding out for a good deal.

I know that i need a good internet connection and a 5ghz router to use GRID gaming properly, does Half Life 2 and Doom, etc require internet. There Android games available on the play, but looking at the information on the play store they only require 25mb of storage (HL2 does anyway, i think doom was listed at 4GB).

Can't say I've noticed any buzzing on mine, with or without headphones on!

In fact, the only sound issue I've come across is that the volume isn't high enough sometimes - I was quite looking forward to getting a decent sound from the front facing stereo speakers but have found them quite quiet! :(

Also, why would you benefit from a 5GHz router?

Just got the MM OTA - I hadn't fully set it up yet, so gonna do an FDR and start afresh on 6.0.

Will report back with impressions :)

I did the 6.0 update this morning - can't say I've had much of a chance to see what's different, except for the option to use your micro SD card as internal storage!

Just ordered the controller for £41, can't see it going down much lower than that for a while.

Now android 6 is here, i've ordered a 128GB SD card to go in there too, along with a mini HDMI converter.

Half life 2, episode 1 and portal are all under £2 each at the minute, doom is £4. I'm pretty sure these were about £8 each last time I looked. I bought all four games for £9.

If your using an SD card with Android 6, you need to go the the app data and change the storage option from external to internal for it too load the game up.

I've not had chance to play them yet, but reviews suggest they should be good and run at around 30fps average. Bargain at the current price though.

Also bought sonic of the play store, runs and looks so much better than using emulators.

Got one of these off the folks for christmas. Been having a blast on shadowgun deadzone using a ps4 controller. I usually hate mobile gaming but given the amount of food and alcohol ive consumed this christmas its perfect for on the sofa.

You know youre in a bad place when console gaming is too much lol. Great tablet.

Is anyone else having issues with Miscellaneous battery drain on Android 6? Seems to be killing the battery on mine. Usually miscellaneous is above Screen on time and i turn the tablet off when i'm not using it too.

My issues with the charger causing screen lag and strange noises seemed to be down to the charger i was using. Brought a new one which works fine.

I was just about to post this Darryl!

MM has not been great so far - I am getting massive drain from "Misc" as well:

In addition, getting a couple of random reboots per day, and also a weird problem where the tablet will hard lock and I have to do a hard power off. Also numerous app crashes and random spells of lag.

Might try a factory reset, although I did an FDR right after the MM update landed, so this is quite strange...

Cheers,

Su

Going to be purchasing one of these very soon, to replace my aging and utterly useless iPad3.

Mazuma Mobile will give me £120 for the iPad 3 so it seems like a no brainer. Need to wait 15 days for the monies though. iOS has been so restrictive that the device has become a reddit, mail and tweeting device for the most part over the past years and a recent holiday where I uploaded a heap of films/shows only to find them 'gone' when I got there just amplified my loathing of it. This is the very last iOS device in my possession and I'm happy I'm getting rid.

I need a device that I can straight up upload content to, whilst at the same time having an open file system and sd card support for about 15gb of RAW images. The K1 should work well enough, even though I don't intend to use it for gaming. At that price it's a steal.

That said, does anyone know when this fabled X1 Shield is due?

This drain only seems to be on android 6.0
I've combatted it slightly by changing a few settings, one of which that makes the most difference is that the shield only uses 2 cores.

I was reading the shield subreddit last night and the Marshmallow bug you speak of seems to be a big one. The battery usage drop you are seeing because apparently one of the cores is constantly running at 100%. You could probably check this by using the CPU-Z app or something similar.

The only fix is a downgrade back to Lollipop.

I'm currently getting about 5 hours screen time before any battery warning, so not great, but hardly the end of the world until they sort out the issues. I wanted android 6 for the better SD card support, installing games like half life, doom, etc would eat up the 16gb in no time, so it allows the SD card to be used like internal memory. I'll be disappointed if it not been sorted with another update soon though, as its already been a few weeks.

Amazon are incredible sometimes. Ordered it on Saturday morning and its here on Monday. Ordered it along with a Fyy slim magnetic cover.

Just setting up the device now and at first I thought it had Marshmallow on it since the UI looks virtually the same as my Nexus 6P. Turned out its 5.1.1 with a OTA update available that I'll pass on for now. It looks like a solid device, however I have noticed that the power and volume buttons are rather difficult to press due to them being deeply recessed - is this normal?

Yes the buttons are meant to be like that, it is frequently criticised in reviews regarding the buttons

Guys, I'm just going to do a cut & paste from my Reddit post here. Is the device really slow to charge for you all? These are my results from just an hour ago...

----

I'll add my input to this as I received my K1 a few days ago and as I type this, it is going through its first full charge from 4% to 100% right now.

My K1 has Lollipop 5.1.1 on it and I previously did notice it charging quite slowly from 80-100% using my 21W 2.4A Apple iPad charger, which I recently sold with my iPad 3.

So yesterday I took delivery of this charger from Amazon UK. Another 21W high output charger. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B019H0K1CK

Before going to sleep last night at midnight I set the Shield to charge. It is now 07:33 (7.5hrs have passed) in the morning and having just woken up, the shield is at 98%. Something doesn't make sense.

I charge a lot of things in this house via USB and this is the first time I have come across such a slow charging device. It is the K1's FIRST full charge I should add. The same USB cable I use to charge my Note4 without issues as well as my Kindle.

Might just order one of these USB Multimeter's to see what is going on. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00Q2HWLYS
