NVIDIA Removes Restriction on ATI GPUs with NVIDIA GPUs Processing PhysX

Well i put my GTX8800 in along with these 257.15 drivers ( albeit 64 bit drivers for win 7), and they loaded in ok (no reboot prompt though) However, there is no "physix" option at all in the Nvidia Control panel. But running Vantage seems to suggest the GTX8800 is having some sort of effect (32K on CPU - up from usual 15K (QX9650

I have it with a 5970:confused:

Hilarious, I was just starting to think maybe Nvidia aren't so bad after all, you know, maybe we've been too hard on them and they do care after all :D

correct there is no option for GPU physx in the NV control panel however it does work, checkout fluidmark and confirm it says hardware physx

From the NV blog.

While it was not intentional, due to the overwhelming positive response to the beta driver we have decided to leave the beta up with support enabled.
   below

Update: NVIDIA tells us that they will also be "fixing" the 257.15 beta driver on their site, so new downloads of that driver will have the restriction in place
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3744/...terogeneous-gpu-physx-its-a-bug-not-a-feature

So have they put the restriction back into there 257.15 beta drivers..

has any1 got a link to the first release of these drivers.
im wanting to try it on my ati cards and use a 8800gt for physics thx in response.

Still don't understand why they can't just leave it enabled with a disclaimer saying hybrid PhysX isn't supported. Surely they would rather some AMD users buy Nvidia cards for PhysX than them not buying one at all?

Because they simply don't want it to be used with any other GPU & quality assurance is just an excuse because they don't even give that with there own GPU using it.

From the beta:
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, NONINFRINGEMENT, OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. NVIDIA does not warrant or assume responsibility for the accuracy or completeness of any information, text, graphics, links or other items contained within the Software. NVIDIA does not represent that errors or other defects will be identified or corrected.
That's is beta so that fits.

From a recent WHQL:
6.1 No Warranties. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND NVIDIA AND ITS SUPPLIERS DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

And there you go they are not guaranteeing anything even when used with NV only setup so why worry about things not working right when used with ATI combo.

I don't understand, they can't win over 100% of ATI consumers to use NVIDIA as their primary GPU so why not enable the remaining folks who WANT to use physx to BUY (money) a lesser physx dedicated nvidia GPU?!

Because nobody will by a brand new card just for physx will they , only second hand ie NV wont make any extra money by leaving it enabled

I did last year, got myself a 9800gt green to go with my 5870, not just for games, but also for using cuda acceleration in coreavc for flawless HD playback on my Media Browser mod for Media Centre (which IS an impressive mod, I can upload pics if anybody wants?).

So they did from me and would from others (how many people bought an nvidia card from when this news broke on impulse alone?), and considering how much ground they have lost this gen to Ati, then it would make soo much sense to sell thousands of old gpus that cost pence to make?

personally, I only ever buy nvidia cards, out of habit. This is a great step forward, nvidia should have kept the original role of the card, an extra add-in at ~£50 that would benefit ATI and Nvidia gamers

It may be too little too late

This is excellent news, I think Mirror's Edge uses PhysX and I do have an old 9600gt lying around, still playing through it so will be a nice free boost.

Just have to work out how to get it all up and running now though.
