NVidia Shield TV

Hmm wondering whether to get this. I wonder what will stream better, this or Steam link

To be fair, this does pretty well for streaming via GeForce. I think they'll both do the job, maybe argue that GeForce is less reliable than Steam. There's a case for both I suspect but I'm happy with the Shield.

Yeh I want it don't get me wrong just trying to think if I need it. My setup is PC and PS4 upstairs. Xbone (and eventually PSTV) downstairs with the main TV. It is downstairs where the Shield would go and I just wonder if I need it. Nice to be able to play PC games downstairs on occasion but not sure it is necessary.

It's not just a PC streaming gadget, research "Kodi" for android, works brilliantly with this, also some decent android games believe it or not, real boxing is canny.

I mainly use Kodi(download from playstore), but PC streaming works brilliantly on this, it's better then both the other shield devices, the gamepad has great battery life and is good to use unless you have ladies hands.

Yeh very true. I think it would be an awesome addition to the front room just don't need it yet. The reason I harp on about the the PC streaming is because the apps side of things is generally sorted by the Xbox. Streaming wise I have Plex as well, haven't really tried Kodi. I reckon it adds more value than Steam link, but you of course pay for what you get. I need to have a more compelling reason - like wanting to play a bunch of the android based games and stream from my PC. I want to do both of these but best to wait for now.

It is amazing value, the pad is £50 on its own, and the box is 8x faster than the quad core fire tv! for £100 basically. Kodi has meant cancellation of Netflix and NowTV and I get more shows for free ;)

Yeh seems quite a nice box, the other option I was considering was the Shield tablet then docking it when I need to. Not sure if this has a big drawback as I expect the newest tablet to be close to the power of the TV version.

Yeh Kodi is basically a lightweight Plex right (encoding done client side?) so it's just a question of getting the source files for the media.

Never tried Plex, but Kodi is simple to use and is simply awesome. The only advantage of the tablet(which is fantastic value also) is , well it's a tablet too. It needs a long HDMI to mini HDMI to fit to TV unless your TV supports Mirroring of some sort. I found the battery life on the tablet to be below average however. Much prefer my Mac Airbook and NVidia TV setup.

Maybe a mod could change the thread to an official shield thread?

That would be good. I think it's the best console on the market, it is unrivalled if you have a PC streaming games. PC games can be dirt cheap and look just as good if not better then PS4 or Xbox One games.

This is a cool piece of kit. I don't have a PC and would like to know if streaming games would be acceptable on this thing or is the latency poor.

I realise this may be connection dependent. If it helps I did a test and a ping of 10ms 72mb download and 18mb upload.

So this has been tempting me although I am using ati currently so would definitely need to change my card first but then I read this today...

Apparently 4k 5.1 streaming is rolling out, anyone tried this?

Sadly we don't have a 4K TV in our house. Yet.

I didn't have any issues streaming the Grid games. I suspect it's more dependant on their servers more than anything as your internet speed will have no issues.

I guess I could try it and if it's no good send it back? Would this be a douche move? I really want this thing.

Not really, it's worth giving it a go. The new steam box looks ok but I haven't seen anywhere to say you can stream anything other than Steam Library.

The GeForce Now games will work perfectly with that connection. They look amazing too, a step up from current gen consoles in some cases, imo.
