lol it will take you all of about 20 minutes to get through every bit of the new dash (including creating an avatar). having a sick day is probably a bit overkill

i reckon the real reason for this is to cut down on failing 360 dvd drives being returned to base and reducing heat output from the dvd drive stopping RROD problems, less heat, less stress on motherboard and solder joints., and increasing overpriced HDD sales.

I doubt it's the 'real' reason, but there is no denying that it will reduce stress on the disk drive and therefore reduce failure rates. Now lets see how long it takes for everyones harddrives to die!

You joke, but I read a website the other day that said MS support staff in USA have already ben briefed on this, and NXE comes out in USA something like 3 days after the 3 yr warranty has expired!! Apparently they are expecting NXE to kill some consoles (I guess most updates or new games kill some consoles, inevitably), obviously the beef this time will be no-one asked for this update that kills their console a few days out of warranty (in USA).

Quick question, since ive only had my xbox for a couple of weeks, if i switch my console on tomorrow before i leave the house will it update itself or does it still need to be 'accepted' eg Push A to start download.
You have to press accept just like any update. It will say something like "An update is available for your console, would you like to update now?". You will definitely have to be at the Box to download it. (Also it is a 2 part download/installation). First system update (main dash?), then the Avatar update happens after and installs to your HDD/MU (I think).

Bummer, thought it would be something like that, ahh well will just have to do it when i get back from the town.
Presumably it will be like every other update, when your console is powered on and connects to Live the update is triggered.
As rp said you need to accept the first update, which basically changes the look and then accept a second update for all the avatars and other guff.
Also I must say that I am looking forward to being able to browse the marketplace on the web. I'm glad they implemented this, if only I could turn my console on remotely that would make the download queing feature slightly better.

It has always prompted in the past, it never just auto installs.
Might help me get back into xboxing, not played for a few months cos my brother had my machine (and killed it). But on the bright side it got fixed free (twice) and I got a new 60gb hard drive and 3 free months of live
Its just a bum having lost all my saves and games I had b4 and vids (loved the Augustana "Boston" one) and cant find it now
I dont mind the dash at the moment, but Im all for change (plus I may get to sit in front of the tele instead of the missus hoggin it)
