NY Trip - Hotel Choices

Thank you all there seems to be so many choices, more than i can remember from 10 years ago. I chose the Pod Times Square http://www.booking.com/Share-nM7X4K which is at £670 for the 4 days. Breakfast wise i am in midtown, the place for a real foodie :):D just need to find those american breakfast diners ..

Can heartily recommend this place in that case. We had breakfast there 6 out of the 7 days we were in New York, and it was excellent every time.

The day we didn’t go to there, we got salmon and cream cheese bagels and a coffee each to eat in Bryant Park from a corner deli, and that cost more than a full breakfast in the diner!

Check out Brooklyn Diner, there's one on 43rd and on 57th. Excellent breakfast and classic diner experience. I'd also recommend Dallas BBQ if you fancy some awesome burgers and bbq food, although be prepared to queue.

Yep, think the flight home had to take a longer take off run down the runway from JFK!

Edit: Just remembered this place as well, that we stumbled upon by accident while we were there. We were going to walk past it, but a local going in saw us browsing the menu posted in the front window, and suggested we try it, telling us it was the best Italian in the city. I wouldn’t say I’m qualified to back that statement up, but I can safely say it was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. :)

It’s on the same street as the Westway Diner. If you exit the diner and turn left, it’s about for a 5 minute walk or so.

There’s also the New York Beer Authority which is right next to the Port Authority bus terminal in that neighbourhood, which I’d recommend if you’re into your beers. It was on the same street as our hotel...Entirely coincidental of course. ;)

just revisiting this thread for a November 2022 update. I was considering the following hotel but it is in the financial district which is quite a distance from the pod where I stayed previously

Anyone been to NYC recently and have any valuable recommendations ?

Stayed at a place called Distrikt in May 2017 which was pretty good, and right by the Port Authority bus terminal, a 2 minute walk from Times Square.

I’ve stayed here, twice in fact, good location and a reasonable price (for NY), I would recommend it to anyone.

Few mins walk from time square and 1 min from a metro station. From there we walked to all the main attractions in Manhattan (up to Central Park and down to the Statue of Liberty).

I’d also advise against staying outside of Manhattan. You are only there for 4 days, you really don’t want to be wasting time commuting on packed grim metro trains. People say the London Underground is bad, the NY metro is worse IMO.

Well it was really bad in LA and San Fran when I was out with work a month ago.

Downtown LA was really really bad. But America is on a downward trajectory big time.

We stayed in the Affinia Manhattan which it seems has rebranded since to the Stewart Hotel. It's opposite MSG, easy to walk to the main central attractions like Central Park, ESB, Rockerfeller, Broadway, Times Square, Macys etc. Also very close to Penn station for rapid connections to further afield, including JFK.

We barely used the subway, took the bus to Battery Park.

Last time out, I stayed just round the corner in the Artezen Hotel which was absolutely fantastic - highly recommend it if it's available and in budget. Fulton Street Station is just around the corner, which has absolutely loads of subway connections. There's also some great bars nearby - Carragher's and the Malt House are just around the corner, head down to Pearl Street/Stone Street for more. The only drawback round there is that there really aren't any decent diners nearby - I went to Pearl Street Diner and it wasn't great I'm afraid. Head up to Tick Tock or Skylight by Penn Station.

thank you everyone managed to get a deal with my marriott points on the springhill suites. Great location for me staying in mid-town lots of good breakfast diners about which fill you up until dinner

pity that the century21 store is no longer around , BF sales have already started seen many deals online which is good as I can get items ordered direct to the hotel.
