o2 Get iPhone Contract

apparently looking at the £300 mark, but that doesn't say if that's for the 4GB or 8GB model. I'm assuming 8GB as that is currently selling for $599

It will almost certainly be the 4GB one, us prices don't get directly converted to uk ones. Look at the ps3, $599 - £425. Add a 2 year contract or whatever it was then that price soars to over £500. Even for a pda phone thats very expensive. God help anyone who buys it if it is O2, £3 per MB is just great.

Depends how good a customer you are :p I'll get it for free, or I'll leave. They'll give it me. I have played this game 3 times, all with very big phones when they were released (N73...N95) and got them all....

The Times is reporting O2 has having secured the exclusive contract.

BBC News are still reporting it as "looking likely" (i.e. not definitive)

Don't know who to believe.

There's also this which would suggest Vodafone will get it, plus the fact that Voda are definitely better equipped from an infrastructure point of view to handle it.

Wasn't the reasoning behind not having 3G due to battery life hence using GPRS/EDGE? I could be wrong, but I'm sure thats what I read somewhere...

I think that it will eventually end up on all networks, I mean Apple has just entered the water and it's an exclusive in that respect so perhaps just keeping it with 1 company for the moment will allow them to see how things pan out. After that they'll be able to bring other players into the game and at least this way they won't lose out in terms of service providers battling to bring the prices down? :o

The was the excuse, not the reason. :p

Jobs is hardly going to stand in front of the world and say "We don't have 3G because we couldn't develop a 3G telephony stack in time" - which is likely to be the real reason. :)

No 3G and now they're thinking of choosing o2? Are Apple *trying* to make the iPhone a failure in Europe or something? :o

Just because the yanks are used to getting fleeced for naff phones on expensive 2 year contracts, doesn't mean we have to put up with it over here. I really wanted the iPhone to be amazing but so far it really isn't looking good :(

Well aprrently, O2 and other providers are hoping to getting their EDGE networks out before the end of this year. Maybe the chance of getting the iPhone contract may make them pull their fingers out, but who knows.

Also, saw this on another site
The Apple iPhone is expected to cost £300 and £399 for the 4GB and 8GB version respectively when it launches in the UK.
Which is by no means definite, but BLOODY hell its going to be one expensive device that, yet again, we get screwed over for

It seems weird to me that the likes of o2 and vodafone would consider rolling out EDGE across their network for the iphone, considering how much they all paid for their 3g licenses and how good 3g coverage is now, but then i don't run a multi-billion pound business so what do I know.

from my experience in the mobile industry-

O2 have a fairly low credit score requirement to be accepted, vodafone have the highest, so high in fact most sales teams hate it when a customer calls to order vodafone, as only about 1 out of 10 get accepted due to their VERY high requirements.

Although this may not be a big part of it, it could be part of the reason as it would seriosuly hinder iphone sales.

I doubt it even crossed their minds to be be honest, it's a premium product and costs a lot of money, people failing credit checks probably aren't a big concern.

Also, more than few places seem to be saying the articals have jumped the and it's far from decided yet. It could be O2 but I'd be surprised, they don't bring anything to the deal, a rubbish network with worse pricing for data.... If they want to bring the EDGE version to the UK I think it'd have to be Orange, if they come up with a 3G version then I'd expect vodafone or t-mobile...
