Hi chaps and gals,

Just checked my email and I've got an invite for a telephone interview at an O2 store for a Retail Advisor job.

I've never had a telephone interview before, so if anyone has any tips or advice please post it. And if anyone has had an interview for a retail O2 job what sort of question may I get asked?

Thanks a lot. :)

At that stage they'll be looking more at personality and how you come across. Be energetic and enthusiastic on the phone and play an active part in the process, don't be quiet giving brief answers. Have an idea of times when you've given excellent service/dealt with difficult customers. Generally though just engage with them on the phone, there will be other stages where they look for specifics, this is a sift to find the type of people they want in their stores rather than the specific person.

Good luck.

Find out a little about the company (background), having some inside information helps (like when did they "leave" BT and become Cellnet, then MMO2 then O2 and then on to O2 Telefonica and when did they take over), the ammount of customer base they have, include Tesco mobile and any other MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) though the focus should be primarily on O2's own customer base (http://mediacentre.o2.co.uk/Press-R...oft-s-Tom-Hosking-as-Head-of-O2-More-305.aspx)
You wont need to know much about the network but any little bit helps ;) and just be yourself after that.
Go to the store that your being telephone interviewed at smart, no doubt you will have an interview with the store manager being present (or maybe there in part as he will pass any info back to his/her boss), the interview will probably be with an area manager, dont be late! early is good though ;)

Good luck and hope you get the job :D

I had an interview over Skype about a month ago which was a very new experience for me. Mine was video as well but treat it like any other interview and be confident and enthusiastic. Being a customer orientated job they will no doubt ask you about your best and worst customer experiences as well as the usual questions about overcoming challenges, development and maybe even the weakness question.

Like with any other interview also make sure you know the company background and the specifics of the role. Look at the key words on the description and do your best to slip them in, so if it's asking for a determined self motivated individual make sure you mention that and better still have an example to back that up. Also make sure that you have some questions for them as they will no doubt ask if you have any for them. Just make sure they aren't obvious ones that you can find out on Google within minutes and this is a chance for you to make yourself look even better. Ask things on the lines of, "What development/training programmes are available for this role?", it will not only make you look genuinely interested in the job but demonstrate that you are keen to develop yourself professionally. Just don't for the love of god ask when you can start :p

Thanks for all the advice, greatly appreciated. :) For some reason the email says it was sent at 17:45:58 but I didn't get it until after 8 and the place is shut for the weekend according to the email. :(

Make sure you wear a suit.

Actually this might be quite good advice! You are more likely to feel professional if you dress smartly rather than sitting in your undercrackers and this may come across.

Other advice is to stand rather than sit, hum or sing a little immediately before the phone call to loosen up your throat and not too gabble on to fill any silences. It is more difficult without the visual clues to tell when to proceed or stop talking and you can expect a certain amount of silence from the other end as he will be writing down what you say.

I am highly experianced when it comes to "tele sales" Here are my top tips...

Do not speak to fast on the telephone... It comes across faster than real life.

While on the call make sure you sit up strait or better still stand up... this will make your voice sound more authrotive

Dont be too friendly or chatty... "how are you doing today" etc. Be offical and positive, dont waffle either. The person on the other side of the phone has to trust you and like you.

Always use a script. Yes this is an interview but its an interview to sell your ability to them. Write down all the questions you have for them and possible answers to the questions they have for you eg "what do your friends say about you", etc etc

On the telephone it is very easy to get brain mash... so have that typed sheet infront of you... the art is reading it like you dont have a script there.

Confidence is important on telephone... any dips and the other person will sense it more than you would have in a person to person interview

When they call you for the interview, thank them for calling you... thats a possitive start

Good luck

Just rang up to book the interview... and it's booked for....

1st July at 2:30

What the hell, I'll be dead or something by the time that date comes around!!!!

Just do it and say, "Hello Azza, it's timmy85 from the internet" and see what the person says. :D

Judging by the calibre of staff in O2 Redditch, you should get the job as long as you don't dribble into the phone for 20 minutes or make a habit of flinging poo at customers.

Well I passed and got a face to face interview next Thursday.

That was so odd, the bloke I was talking to seemed a bit slow at typing his exact words were "You'll have to excuse me if I don't reply quickly or there is a bit of silence, because I'm a bloke I'm slow at typing" :D

And he was humming and signing a little bit while he was looking and checking details etc before the interview started. :D
