O2 Unlocking form for iPhones

Yes that's right - They expect you to continue paying your contract but it just means your phone is unlocked and can be used on other networks.

Cheers for the heads up on this, just submitted the form now - will be really handy having it already unlocked.

Just gotta wait for contract to finish, got months left :(

Good evening Tom

Thanks for emailing us about unlocking the iPhone.

I would first of all like to apologise for the incorrect information given to you about unlocking your iPhone.

Tom, you can unlock your iPhone from our network to use another network SIM card in it. To do this, you need an 'unlatching' code, which costs £15.

We can only give you the code if you've been on our network for at least a year. That's because we covered part of the price of your phone when you bought it, to make it cheaper for you.

If you'd like to get your unlatching code, please email me back with the following information:

- your mobile number
- your address (including full postcode)
- another contact number
- your phone's make and model
- your IMEI (international mobile equipment identity) code, which is unique to your phone. To get this, call *#06#
- Pay & Go mobile number (if you have activated it)
- Pay & Go SIM card Serial Number (starts with 89441100 and can be found on the back of the SIM card)
- full name
- full address including postcode
- date of birth
- how you'd like to pay £15 (credit or debit card or calltime credit (from Pay & Go account)).

im not sure though, as i got the phone from apple store online...

So if I had an payg iPhone on a non iphone tariff, could I in theory move to an iphone tariff for a month, get the phone unlocked, and then move back to the previous tariff? Seems like a bit of a loophole to get it done early, would still cost ~£15 in the months tariff charges.

You don't get a code, the iPhone doesn't work that way iirc.

The reason O2 say it takes 14 days is that O2 sends your IMEI to Apple to put on a whitelist of unlocked phones.

When that's done, restore/update your phone, plug it into iTunes to activate, it'll handshake with Apple and you'll get a "Your iPhone has been unlocked" message.

Just got a text saying that my iPhone can't be unlocked. No idea why. Now I'll have to spend hours on the phone to some call centre... :(

Mine took 7-8 days but I did send the form in just after it was announced so I expect newer requests to be completed quicker. It's worth doing even if you have no plan to use another SIM in it as it gives you more options later on and increases resale value.

You can unlock it with just about any SIM card you can find. I only had a disabled Vodafone one which I had ported my number from and it let me unlock it through iTunes even though the SIM was useless. I believe that once you have done the unlock through iTunes once it is unlocked for good across all networks and future software updates.
