From today (tues) o2 have changed their upgrade and retention criteria

From now on o2 will only off you money off and/or new handsets at reduced prices if you spend £35 or more a month. Two o2 retention staff have told me this and they were informed this morning and they cant do any deals on price plans less than £35.

If you have been offered a deal but not accepted (like me) you can phone up and get it if you persuade them

Just to let you know.

Steve.

This kind of thing will happen accross the board as telco's are getting fed-up on keeping customers that don't actually make them any money.
This very forum is full of people who simply every 12 months try and get the most expensive phone they can for free, dump it on EBay and then cost the network for another 12 months.

Once again, if people had actually just used the upgrade services to get a new phone every year and not try and squeeze everything they can then we'd all still be enjoying cheap upgrades no matter how much or little we spent each month.

But there you go, there are always those more important than others.

My contract is up with O2, on a rolling one atm until i decide on what new phone to get. Currently have a K750i on a £25 a month contract. So from this info, i wouldn't be able to get a N73 on my current tariff. I would have to cancel and start a new contract.

It doesn't suprise me to be honest. I assume it just means that an upgrade price will be set for each handset on tariffs under £35 and there won't be an flexibility in it. Would seem the companies are now interested in keeping profitable customers, and not simply getting as many customers as possible, even if they aren't profitable.

Doesn't affect me, as with the ridiculous amounts i give o2 each month, I like to think they'd like to keep me as a customer.

Thing is i get super deals without even trying, like my P990I i was fully expecting to pay 150 odd for the upgrade, as i only have a £23 pcm contract with vodafone, and i ended up getting it free, without even haggling, they have made a rod for their own back imo.

lol yeah I agree on that one.

I just gave in my thirty days to orange, my average bill is £25 a month so they didn't bat an eyelid.
I'm stick of telcos increasing the ARPU's, orange turned the screw again recently by charging for itemised billing.

Yeah, damn those nasty networks for wanting to be a business not a charity...

I've just told Orange where go too...

They wanted £100 for an M3100 and my average bill is £60 per month.  Not even retentions would budge!!

There's no harm in trying to get the most expensive phone you can for free. It doesn't even matter whether after you've got it you sell it on eBay or keep it yourself, as either way, the network has already given it to you so it's no further loss to them. I don't think the networks are ever going to win. The ease of transfering your number to a different network and getting a great new phone on a new contract means that people will simply start changing networks every year (or 18 months) to get the best deal. The networks will then be even worse off as they'll be giving away expensive phones for free, and all the other incentives you usually get with a new contract, and they'll be giving them away more often.

Yeah, damn those nasty networks for wanting to be a business not a charity...

I'm sure the networks are well aware of the market they are in. If they don't want to be treated in such a way, then they should get out of that market. They are there to exploit me as much as they can and get as much of my money. So when the opportunity for me to exploit them comes up, I damn well will, for every penny. That's my business :p

I just had a new phone off o2 literally last week. And according to the details I got this morning in writing from o2 in 12 months time they guarantee to offer me a promotional deal thats at least as good as new customers can get in o2 high street stores, plus a few new pay montly handset.

I have a feeling I won't get such a good upgrade offer next year. If they don't give me what I want or match the best offer from another network, I'll just leave. Their loss, not mine, I even get to keep my number.

I have 2 phones on my account. My O2 contract is up for renewal and so far they have offered me 200 mins plus 500 texts per month for £15 on each line, not bad but asking for £49 for the Samsung d900 and the XDA Mini £79...currently got Samsung E720 and XDA Exec.

Hoping to get the phones for free.

Break/lose phone, claim off insurance sell phone, buy next model up for very little with no contract forced on you, win win. :)

worst thing i ever done was to leave orange...........although my bills have halved with t mobile. But the amount of dropped calls or unsucessful call attempts is astounding. As is the delay in texts and mms.....also if your using UTMS/3G on t-mobile then if some one tries to call you some times they get the answer phone straight away. Officially T mobile say 3g doesnt support data and voice ithought this was the whole point of 3g?, my old orange phone would do it fine! Where as if im locked to a 2g signal then i get all calls fine when surfing as grps priortises(sp) voice calls over data.

On the mda pro MMS is also touch and go, if im in a 2g area(my house) then it tries to download the mms for ages, its the same for sending. As soon as im in a 3g area its fine and even when it does send it can be days before the other person gets it

This isnt just me ranting as me and my missus both left orange for t mobile and the amount of rows that are caused from mislayed or very late texts is obsurd.

Luckily i switched my orange contract to a payg and used a new number on the t mobile contract.

T- mobile offer a great package with the web n walk and it really is a good feature but i never had any problems with orange on reception or lost calls. T mobile are that bad that before i make a call i have to look at the screen to check reception.

A lot of my friends are on tmobile as well and always get dropped calls etc.

You couldnt use t mobile if you was a business user as it would be very embarassing with all the dropped calls.

BUT for the amount of money they save me i guess its worth the embarassment, my orange bills were always over £100, with t mobile they are around 50. Also orange has a far better CS and insurance policy. T mobile charge a excess and use a 3rd party company. The amount of times i had rung orange and reported a phone fault only to have a new one in my hands the next day is unreal.

Also i save a lot of time with being able to send/receive emails where ever i am with attatchments.

i also find that orange actually know there stuff where as t mobile havnt a clue......

There have been a few times where on my orange phone ive received calls from orange and they have said"our computer has detected a fault with your phone, when will you be in to receive a replacement!" how cool is that?

As it is my mda pro is only around 6 months old and is falling to bits, as a phone anything that runs wm is rubbish as a all round machine they are invaluable.

My 12 months was up over 6-months ago and I have to phone tomorrow cause my phone packed up today.

I'm an o2 online customer with £22.50 per month rental and by the sounds of things based on the above info, I'm not going to get much of a deal.

I wonder what are the set prices for phones for upgrade users now as from past experience each person on the phone offered it to at a different price.
